Overview

The Akai Pro MPK mini is an ultra-compact mini-keyboard with an impressive array of buttons, knobs and pads to provide hands-on performance and production control no matter your location. MPK mini strikes the perfect balance between portability and comprehensive software control by melding together the complete control offered in the popular Akai Pro MPK family with the grab-and-go convenience of the LPK25 and LPD8. With a 25-note keyboard, 8 backlit, MPC-style pads and 8 Q-Link knobs, the MPK mini is the ultimate portable controller to get your music moving.

The MPK mini keyboard is ideal for quickly entering notes and phrases into your computer. The velocity-sensitive keys allow you to accurately express dynamics, while accessing different pitch ranges is done instantly through dedicated Octave Up and Octave Down buttons. Create sparkling, staccato leads and driving bass-lines in a variety of time denominations and patterns with MPK mini's built-in arpeggiator. A Tap-Tempo button gives you the ability to quickly adjust the arpeggiator clock, which is essential if you're looking to stay in sync with a band. A Sustain button holds notes after releasing your hand from the keyboard allowing you the opportunity to easily pound pads and twist knobs, with no pedal required.

MPK mini's 8 backlit, velocity-sensitive pads are based on Akai Professional' MPC line of iconic music production stations. Great for firing one-shot samples and sequencing drum patterns, you can use the pads to send note information, MIDI CCs, or even program changes. Pressing the Bank button will quickly toggle between 2 banks of pads giving you access to 16 pads in total. Additionally, the MPK mini has 8 assignable Q-Link knobs to control virtually any parameter in your software.

MPK mini works plug-and-play with Mac and PC and requires no software driver installation or wall power for operation. It has four memory banks for programming and recalling settings appropriate to your favorite software programs. The included software editor lets you quickly map MPK mini's controls as well.

What should you expect from a $99 midi control keyboard? Well, if you're like me, I expected something mediocre but I'm actually pretty impressed with this little unit. Want a midi controller that feels like a real piano keyboard? Then cough up the money for one. This feels like a smaller, midi-control keyboard, and if you are smart enough to check one out in the store, you'll know what you were getting and if it's right for you. This has enough control for me to do anything I need or want in Ableton, and it fits in my laptop bag nicely, super portable. One thing that always kept me from going with Akai's MPD's or APC is because they traditionally use of endless rotary knobs. This one has finite start and stop points, which is definitely my personal preference. Pretty simple plug-and-play setup for the most part, I was up and running in under a minute. I'd definitely recommend this controller, especially if you are a.) on a budget and/or b.) looking for portability.

The sales guy at Guitar Center recommended this product after I approached the bench carrying the older LPK and LPD products. I wanted to experiment with a pad input device without investing a lot of money, and since this product was a keyboard and pad input device in a portable format, I figured that if I didn't like it I could give it away. Well, when I pulled it out of the box, I realized the keys are much smaller than they appear in the picture on the box, and playing the keyboard reminds me of touching those children's keyboards in Toys-R-Us. The pads are the same size as the pads on much more expensive devices, and they feel the same. You should insert the disc in your Apple or Windows computer and install the driver before connecting the USB cable. By the way, the ONLY connector on the device is the micro-USB port, so don't buy any of the "recommended accessories" as they will not work with this device at all. It is compact and the dials feel ok, so if you can get past the keyboard's size and feel then perhaps you might like it, as it works just fine with Garage Band 9. I am glad I didn't spend more than $105 on it; I will keep it for now but I am definitely shopping for a higher quality portable multi-input device, and I will definitely touch it before buying it next time.

Best Mini Controller by far

By Mike

from New York, NY

Comments about Akai Professional MPK Mini Laptop Production Keyboard:

Couldn't Wait for this to come out. Its an All-in-one mini controller, and cheeper then buying the LPK25 and LPD8. The keys feel great and lights are really cool. Can't go wrong with this product.

Good concept Poor execution

By Zach

from Pittsburgh, PA

Comments about Akai Professional MPK Mini Laptop Production Keyboard:

I have been looking for a quality compact midi keyboard. I used the Korg nanoKey and was disappointed with the poor quality and key play. Akai has a reputation for quality and I hoped that this would be true of the mini. Not so in overall. The Bad- the keys. They are flimsy. They are impossible to get accurate velocity out of and you have to strike the key bed so hard to get a regular volume it renders them useless. Also there is some strange built in latency in the keys that also makes them useless. The rotors are cheap and I was not able to get them to map in Live. I could get a midi signal out of them but no mapping. Not good for a company that touts it's integration with Live. The Good- Only good thing was the pads. They felt nice. No latency. Overall the downsides make this product unusable. If Akai fixes it then it could be good however the current incarnation is just plane bad.

Works Great For What It Is!

By CEO Studios

Comments about Akai Professional MPK Mini Laptop Production Keyboard:

I got this to use with my laptop when I'm on the go. We have the MPK 49 for the Studio. It is what it says...a mini. I have had no problems with it and would tell everyone out there to go buy one. Just dont go in thinking its going to do EVERYTHING the big boy does, its not. It is GREAT for what it can do though. ALMOST everything the 49 can do!

By Harrison Knop

Comments about Akai Professional MPK Mini Laptop Production Keyboard:

This is super nice for any type of creation purposes. You could buy and LPD for 70 and then an LPK for 70. Or both in one for 100. Slick design, only a bit more than a day with it and love it already!

Works great, Midi Editor Software is confusing

By Oz

from Calexico CA

Comments about Akai Professional MPK Mini Laptop Production Keyboard:

I got this one to trigger sounds on Toontrack's BeatStation, it works really great. I jsut had some trouble to figure out the midi software editor which is included with the AKAI. 1st of all make sure you download the latest version o fthat midi editor on AKAI's website, go to MPK Mini support and there you will find it. 2nd once you downloaded it open it with Winrar or Winzip and place it on your favorite folder on your PC, make a shortcut to your desktop since this is not a program that will get installed on your computer, it is like an application that you will open all the time from same path... so go click the Mini Akai Edito.exe file... or the short cut you made, but first connect the AKAI which will be recognized by your computer, it did in mine running WIN7 x64. 3rd on the editor choose the AKAI and continue, go where it says note display type section which lets you choose the way you want to see the notes on the banks, as keys (C# etc)or as Key Numbers (41,42 etc) Choose the numbers since the beatstation pads are configured that way, and then just change each pad on the bank section. Ex. Pad1 will be: Note# 36 (bass in beatstation) PC#1, CC#2, and continue with each pad.. make sure you increment the PC#2, CC#2 on the Pad2, and make it #3 on the pad 3 and so... finally press Upload and it will load to the AKAI... regarding the knobs I havent been able to work on them yet.... so this is for Beatstation, really nice software, i fully recommend it... will try with Reason later as well.. *Last comment, unplug and plug again the AKAI before openning the Editor, each time... if not you will not able to upload whatever modification you make on it. Find me on youtube as ALLSIC

Not 4 stars, 4 and a half! AMAZING!

By Sammy Schein

from Morton Grove IL

Comments about Akai Professional MPK Mini Laptop Production Keyboard:

Okay I want this review not to be 4 stars but 4 and a half but I am not able too so imagine its 4 and a half. This is an amazing device. Very, portable, amazing quality and very responsive. I use this with FL Studio on my laptop and it works like a charm. Honestly this is one of those things that u get what you pay for. You aren't getting screwed over but your not getting an amazing deal. This device is worth $100.

Nice tool

By kdaniel

from austin, tx

Comments about Akai Professional MPK Mini Laptop Production Keyboard:

I picked this up for use with my Artist Studio One (I use a PreSonus Firestudio Project interface). It works perfectly for what I needed it for. I do a lot of acoustic music and this little controller now gives me the ability to enhance back grounds with the instruments/effects/sounds found in Artist Studio. I do not think it would be possible to just take off and play it like a key board, but again that was not what I wanted. Just a simple controller to access the files on the program I am using. Have played around with a couple of songs and am very happy with the results. As I use it more, am certain I will get a bit more involved with what it's full potential is.

Perfect for ableton...once you figure it out

By Rae O'Shea

from Kendall Park, NJ

Comments about Akai Professional MPK Mini Laptop Production Keyboard:

I got this to use as a controller for Ableton when I'm on the go, as it fits perfectly in a laptop case with my computer. The mpk mini is exceptional...once you get it working. Scripts for the mpk mini are not included in Live, so you need an adept understanding of computers to be able to get this thing playing nice with the program. I've heard of similar issues with Logic, but really, if you're using these programs chances are you can figure this out or find a forum with detailed instructions. This is NOT a plug and play instrument, you will have to toy around with your computer to use it. The pads are super responsive, and I've been able to map samples to them or use them to launch clips. The velocity on the keys is not AMAZING but much better than I would have expected in this price range. The built in Arpeggiator is definitely a plus. Great product for the price, especially if you travel a lot and need something mobile to work with.

For the price you can't complaint.

By William Rivera

from Orlando, Florida

Comments about Akai Professional MPK Mini Laptop Production Keyboard:

This midi controller has anything that you nee for its purpose. It is light and ready to use anywhere and everywhere with no software to be installed. You plug it just as soon as it is outside the box and Poom! it is ready to use. I've seen people reviewing this item and complaining about the keys not being heavy. Again, you pay for what you get! And for the price of the MPK mini this is just amazing. The only improvement I could really see done is adding bigger knobs. Other than that The MPK is everything the market tells you it is. Small, portable and amazing.

Cant beat it for the price.

By Robert Mata

from West Suburbs of Chicago, IL

Comments about Akai Professional MPK Mini Laptop Production Keyboard:

Great piece of beginner gear. You could buy the keys an pads separate and pay more in the long run, and take up more USB ports, but this combines them all in one. I got this a year ago when I started dabbling in production. The keys feel alright, and the pads are pretty nice. The knobs seem to be pretty responsive. Im currently looking at going to a 49-key and a 16 pad controller now, but even once i do, Ill be keeping this little guy for when inspiration hits on the go.

this thing is of the chain my first midi controller and it is worth every bit i use fl 10 and it linked up no problems almost like they go together and trust me when i say no problems the pads i notice for what they are is real nice the pads sit higher than the other controller the only and small problem is where the usb sits kinda whatch out for it metal inside a plastic case can crack real easy i all ways wanted a mpc but lets face it 2,gs for one is out my reach most people dont have it like that so i figuerd if i have a nice daw and a good mpc style controller there it is right there without the 2,gs

Portable and nice

By LUIS NATALI

from Los Angeles, CA

Comments about Akai Professional MPK Mini Laptop Production Keyboard:

I love this keyboard. For only 80 bucks you have a very portable MIDI controller with nice 8 mpc style pads, enough keys and knobs to map. I use it as a controller not only with Logic, but also for live VJing which is really cool. If you want a portable and compact controller, look no further. This thing is great.

Pretty good for music producers...

By Cameron Drake

from Texas

Comments about Akai Professional MPK Mini Laptop Production Keyboard:

I was so happy when I got this. It is super light, portable and easily to control. The arp feature was an added bonus which I enjoyed alot. I would say if you are looking to use this as part of your studio, to save up and get the akai mpk or an Mpc because although its a great device for traveling, your limited on what you could do. If your on the road alot then this will definently make your music production much easier than having to haul around a Mpc. The pads have a nice sensitivity but it could be a bit more sensitive for my liking. All in all, great device and it's fun making beats.

love the product galore but was disappointed with on-line order........

By John Linde

from Fayetteville, NC

Comments about Akai Professional MPK Mini Laptop Production Keyboard:

i'll give this product a 5 star, BUT, i'm giving GuitarCenter.com a 2 star,. I ordered this product immediately on 01/25/13, as I have been watching reviews and deciding on a affordable midi keyboard to put together some tracks via my FL Studio 9. I was sent an e-mail stating this product was on back order as they do not have them in stock? I visit my local Guitar Center store here in Fayetteville, NC, just to browse and gather up some ideas for more gear I would eventually want to purchase for the project I am working on, and low and behold, there are THREE Akai Professional MPK mini Laptop Production Keyboards in front of me!? same price I found on-line, same model galore! how did I receive a message after ordering this product saying, no longer in stock, on back order? well, thanks to my local outlet they fixed this issue and I was able to walk away WITH the Akai I ordered 3 days ago efficiently from them!, not certain I will ever order thru GuitarCenter.com in any future purchases......dissatisfied with on-line service!!

Based on first take

By Chase Helmick

from Massillon, Ohio

Comments about Akai Professional MPK Mini Laptop Production Keyboard:

I use this MPK mini with Ableton Live 8. I just got it today and plugged it in as soon as i got it. I disregarded the manual and software that came with it and just started to use it. Right away Ableton recognized the MPK mini. Without doing any mapping it worked. One negative i can see is that the pads are not extremely responsive. I like to play metal which means a lot of 16th and 32nd notes. The MPK doesn't always pick them all up. But they still work. Despite the small size the keyboard keys are very nice. I havent tried mapping the knobs yet, but im sure they will work just fine like the rest of the MPK mini.
