Overview

The Akai LPD8 Laptop Pad Controller is a USB-MIDI controller for musicians, producers, DJs, and other music creators. The controller measures less than 13" across and weighs less than a pound so it fits easily into your laptop case, backpack, or messenger bag for extreme portability.

The LPD8 is based on Akai Professional's MPC line of iconic music production stations. Producers who love the feel of the Akai MPC and want to work with the software on their computer find that the LPD8 gives their laptop the controls they prefer to a mouse and keyboard.

The Akai LPD8 has 8 orange light-up pads that are velocity-sensitive for programming rhythmic or melodic parts. The pads can also send program-change information to software. Additionally, the LPD8 pad controller has 8 Q-Link knobs you assign to virtually any parameters in the software for hands-on control.

The Akai Professional LPD8 Laptop Pad Controller is plug-and-play compatible with Mac and PC computers requiring no software driver installation or wall power for operation. The LPD8 controller also has 4 memory banks for programming and recalling settings appropriate to the music software programs you own.

The Akai LPD8 is a cool controller to say the least. I bought this because I didn't have any sort of drum pads. It's cheap, though it doesn't feel cheap. 8 drum pads and 8 knobs. The pads feel solid. Similar to their other products I have tried. The knobs are nice, although a bit small. But it is ment for laptops, so I guess that's alright. Overall I think it's great. I even found a way to get LED feedback on the pads, which looks cool.

So let's keep in mind this is supposed to be a "cheap" midi trigger (even though there's a similar pad controller from korg that's $10 cheaper. We'll get to that soon). so I picked this little guy up from GC thinking that I'd be able to use this with superior drummer and reason on my computer. It's plug and play so it worked with all the software with minimal setup. But when I tested it out with reason there was serious lag, and couldn't compensate with any of the settings. With superior drummer there wasn't any lag but the pads were pretty unresponsive so I had to set up superior to have basically no dynamic range. Also the knobs didn't map out very well with any of the controls in reason, so there's that. So if you need a cheap mpc maybe try the minikorg that has 16 pads instead of 8 and only one parameter control... Or if you don't need anything to control parameters just get the akai lpk25 (which i've had for a long time and is much cheaper than both mpc's) and does a much better job for triggering midi (drums and synth). Save yo'self some moneys either way.

Great Quality but Fragile

By Calvin

from Downey

Comments about Akai Professional LPD8 Laptop Pad Controller:

I previously owned a Korg Nanopad but it broke on me a month in. I dropped on the CARPET floor, a 3 feet drop and the usb port inside broke, so I wanted a better pad. I found the LPD8 and it looked and felt great. Its velocity sensitive and the pads light up which is a great bonus for toggle buttons. However, I recently dropped it and it cease to function as well. Please be careful of these one. It works great and plays well with Ableton but can be fragile if dropped or thrown.

best inexpensive upgrade to your live show

By A-Minor

Comments about Akai Professional LPD8 Laptop Pad Controller:

For the price, this pad cannot be beaten. Seriously. The pads are solid and seem to be able to take a beating. Pros: -great portability -durable -multiple bank settings -backlit pads (when hit) -ease of use -velocity sensetive pads -great value Cons: -wish there was at least one free-turning knob -position of the usb should be on the top to be able to bridge it between the turntables without the cord getting in the way

Akai knows whats up

By Clay Scratch

from Tucson, Arizona

Comments about Akai Professional LPD8 Laptop Pad Controller:

These akai pads are great for ableton or DJing. fun to play with, very durable. Mapping software has a steep learning curve but works great once you know how to use it. I'm considering upgrading to a controller with more pads in the future but for the price this really cant be beat.

Works with Linux!

By John

from Sabdy Eggo, People's Republic of California

Comments about Akai Professional LPD8 Laptop Pad Controller:

I just picked this up today, so I have no comments about durability, pad response, or anything else that you need some time and experience to comment on intelligently (except that it feels better built than the Korg NanoKontrol I bought and quickly returned). I can report one great thing, however: this things works perfectly with my Asus eeePC running Ubuntu Linux 10.04. Just plug it in, and it's recognized as a MIDI device. Start pounding away: no configuration necessary! The tricky part is that you need to use the computer to change the LPD8's MIDI parameters ... and Akai only supplies software for Windows and Mac OS X. Well, just install "WINE" (a software package that allows you to run Windows software on Unix-y operating systems) on your Linux box and then install the Windows software. It works perfectly. No, really--it just fires up and works. Amazing. I also tried Akai's LPK25 keyboard controller, and it was the same story. Akai did a fantastic job with compatibility. One thing that's not obvious from reading the blurbs is that the pads light up when you hit them, which gives it nice feedback. They also light up when the LPD8 *receives* MIDI, which makes for a neat light show when you accidentally send the output of your sequencer to the LPD8. :-D

I returned this it was so horrible

By The Undead

from Los Angeles, CA

Comments about Akai Professional LPD8 Laptop Pad Controller:

I can't believe this controller is getting positive reviews. So hey great controller far better built the the similar Korg which I own as well, the hardware isn't even in the same league. Anything beyond that this thing is seriously unusable or so difficult to configure if your not using ableton. The problem with the LDP8 is the software, it's a horrible especially for OS X. I Have several MIDI controllers and have a deep understanding of MIDI and how to set it up on DAW's. it very easy these days and I've been working with MIDI for 15 years. When you set the pads up in the software it changes the firmware inside the controller at least it supposed to. It doesn't matter what note you try to change a pad to rather it's C3 or G#1 it will not change even if you save it and set it as a default. I can't even get this unit to trigger an EXS 24, sampletank etc let alone anything useful. I spent an hour inside GC the sales staff couldn't get mine or several they had in stock to work either unless it was using Abelton. We tried Pro Tools, Cubase, Logic Studio 9 and Sonar on both PC's and Macs, it just didn't work. While I was trying to get this functioning I sent Akai 11 different support tickets, not one was answered. I have no idea why they don't seem to care but they obviously don't, I took it back and spent my money elsewhere. Don't buy this unit if your using the DAW's I mentioned earlier, it wont work.

Good Product

By Luis

Comments about Akai Professional LPD8 Laptop Pad Controller:

This is a great product and has a good feel to it. It is definetly worth the price. The only thing that is needed is probably a couple faders. Another thing is that it is pretty fragile. I droped it once and it stoped working. The warranty is very much recomended.

good performance cheap parts

By Nate

Comments about Akai Professional LPD8 Laptop Pad Controller:

I loved how this product performed and also worked with all my programs so easily. But I went to plug it in and the USB plug broke right off the board and fell inside. If it cost me any more i would complain to the manufacturer.
