Overview

The Akai EIE PRO (Electromusic Interface Expander) I/O is a tabletop USB audio interface perfectly tailored for your project and portable studio setups. This four-in, four-out (4x4) device enables you on Mac and PC-based systems to record at 24-bit audio resolution at sample rates of 44.1kHz, 48kHz, and 96kHz into virtually any DAW, recording or performance software. The EIE PRO I/O also houses three convenient USB inputs, in addition to its main USB port, enabling you to connect controllers, hard drives or any other peripheral when native ports on a computer may be limited. The compact recording interface contains high-quality components including nickel-plated input jacks, analog-style VU meters and a rugged aluminum casing for a powerful, professional, portable audio solution.

Each channel of the EIE PRO I/O has an XLR/TRS combo jack, dedicated sturdy, gain-pots and Mic/Line/Guitar switches. The EIE PRO I/O features four discrete-design preamplifiers with 48V phantom power for use with virtually any microphone. Individual 1/4" Nickel-plated jacks found on the back of EIE PRO I/O provide you with channel inserts for processing audio signals externally. You can monitor sessions on multiple sets of studio monitors using the four 1/4" balanced outputs, which are also Nickel-plated. Both pairs of outputs can be monitored visually with the high-quality, analog VU meters providing classic features with modern style. For remote tracking and alternative playback, the EIE PRO I/O has a 1/4" TRS headphone output. High quality analog-to-digital and digital-to-analog converters ensure that every detail of your session or performance gets captured and played back faithfully.

The EIE PRO I/O sends and receives four audio channels on a single USB cable for simple, universal interface to a computer. The three additional USB ports allow EIE PRO I/O to function as a hub as well, bridging other MIDI controllers and hard-drives to the computer. The USB interface is class compliant for plug-and-play operation with Mac OS X and Windows XP, Vista and 7. The EIE PRO I/O features traditional MIDI In and Out jacks for playing and controlling software with keyboard and pad controllers, workstations, and other MIDI-compatible instruments.

Overall a very nice unit, the added USB ports are great especially if you are using a MacBook Pro with only 2 USB inputs.
This unit has a few more features than I needed or was used to but now that I learn how to use them I quite like them.
I have NOT experienced problems with this unit at all and I got mine from the very first batch that made it in the US. I can tell the sound is better than my pervious interface unit.
The crackling and pops that I have experienced has been due to my computer being overwhelmed with the recording/modeling software, I have experienced this with other units in the past under the same conditions. I mean when the CPU usage goes past 90% you are doomed.
This thing being an all metal casing unit is really well built, some of the toggles feel stiff but that not big deal. the assignable VU meters are nice.
Overall I am really satisfied, the preamps on this unit are better than the Line 6 unit it replaced and I have been able to use my Ribbon mic with it to mic amps.

The sound overall is also better than what I had, i can tell when I listen to music through iTunes.

I was really un pleased with this product.. Mainly because I never got to use it to it's full potential. I was able to use it as an interface (after some searching on forums how to access it without updated drivers) but had extremely poor sound quality, tons of noise and clicking. I didn't realize until AFTER I bought it that Akai hadn't updated their drivers to be used on Mac's new operating system, Mavericks (10.9), which has been out for over 3 months!! No word from Akai on when they will have that... Which basically means I can't use it as a sound card... Which makes it kind of worthless. But I do have to say that after I called Musicians Friend about the problem they have been more than helpful... Turning it in for Komplete Audio 6.. Akai needs to start being more professional and they need to not encounter these problems every time Apple releases a new update, by working WITH Apple.

Comments about Akai Professional EIE PRO 24-bit Audio/MIDI Interface with USB Hub:

Credentials: Akai EIE Pro owner for well over 2 years, now, and co-host/ creator of The SOGOpod podcast. Amateur musician and semi professional animator.

Allow me to begin by saying that 99% of the issues I see reported with the Akai are user error. How someone can botch a simple driver installation so badly is beyond me, but I can verify that Windows 7, 8, and 8.1 wall work fabulously with the Akai. The drivers have, indeed been kept up to date, and have been perfectly usable for me since day 1. In other words, "werks on MY machine!"

The interface, itself is very, very good looking, and an all metal construction (aside from knobs) makes it highly durable. All the XLR cables I've ever used have fit snugly, and engaged with a satisfying "click" to ensure good connection, and the switches are all firm, and springy.

In use, I am able to reduce latency to unnoticeable levels within Mixcraft 6/7, without degrading quality. Although, if you're not using software effects, you can direct monitor using a fader knob on the front that fades between incoming (your mic) and outgoing (your PC) signals. This is INCREDIBLY useful for live streaming on twitch (or anywhere else), since OBS does not have a live mic monitor in the software.

The preamps are nice and clean, especially for the price, and treat your mic well. I've heard cleaner, of course, but not for under $150+ more, and the slight (and I mean so slight that you won't notice it, unless you know what you're looking for) hiss can be easily mitigated with a very light noise gate, or using something like audacity's "trunicate noise" tool. Although, even for my podcast, I hardly bother, anymore. In other words, I wouldn't use it to record Rhiana's new album, but I would, and have, used it to record a demo album, YouTube videos, etc. It's good for pretty much anything that you don't want to buy studio time for.

In short, it's been an awesome interface for me. It's been the one piece of equipment I've been able to just "set and forget", and that's a beautiful thing, for any musician/ content creator.

If it ever died (God forbid), I would buy it, twice more. I sincerely hope they decide to come out with another, preferably USB 3.0, version.

If your PC OS is Windows 8 or 8.1, never buy this.
It keeps on crashing your OS and never works.
The company has done nothing for it for years.

Comments about Akai Professional EIE PRO 24-bit Audio/MIDI Interface with USB Hub:

I have only had this for a little over two months and I've been using it to record my band. Setting it up with Pro Tools was bad enough, I had so many problems but once I got past that, it seemed to work fine other than the VU meters, which were very unreliable. I plugged it in today to record again, and it was unrecognizable by my computer. I would have tried to reinstall the driver but Akai's driver will not install. It's not just a problem on my computer. Save yourself the effort and buy a different interface. I've seen many reviews about the same problem. It looks nice, but it functions badly.

You don't know when it is going to break down and they don't replace the unit they fix it through bamel tv and you have to wait a long time for your unit. This is after you go through the changes tecj support puts you through.
Buy another unit that has a guarantee.

Comments about Akai Professional EIE PRO 24-bit Audio/MIDI Interface with USB Hub:

I received this interface and was immediately impressed by how durable it felt. It is HEAVY and feels like it costs considerably more than it's worth. I plugged it in and ran a few tests, and I was amazed at how quiet the recordings are! The preamps are so clean, and you cannot so much as hear the slightest bit of background noise. I've read about the lack of reliability of the VU meters and feel that this is not an issue for me as I have always relied first and foremost on my LED meters within my DAW. I have to admit, though, that the flashing red lights in the VU meters when clipping the signal is pretty cool and does at least provide an indication that I need to ease off the gain a bit!

This is a very attractive machine; it was absolutely simple to install; it works seamlessly within Adobe Audition CS6; it is very simple to operate (although you should probably read the THREE pages within the start-up guide thoroughly at least once to familiarize yourself with its flexible features); it has several outputs for monitoring (which I absolutely LOVED); the preamps are so quiet; and it is built like a tank!

On a final note, I literally shopped for months for a unit I felt would bring, to the table, no more and no less than what I need at the current capacity of my home studio. And I have to say this unit delivered WITHOUT DISAPPOINTMENT!

Comments about Akai Professional EIE PRO 24-bit Audio/MIDI Interface with USB Hub:

I got this to be able to do quick kick, snare, oh-oh drum demo recording, as well a simple vocal and guitar mics. On two computers (one mac, one pc) and two different DAWs (Sonar, Reaper) I had problem after problem. Often I would get everything set and be tracking when I would be blasted by clipped out white noise. The signal would go from music to white noise. Other times this would happen only on the recorded track, but not in the headphones. Most annoyingly, however, when recording vocals in input 1, the recorded signal would go dead. I would switch the digital input to track 2, and there it would be, even though it is plugged into the Akai's input 1. Lots of crossed wires, lots of aborted takes due to bad performance. I have two other interfaces, one a 10 channel and one a 2 channel. They never give me problems. This thing looks great, but is maddening to use.

I was very excited to buy this product and put it right to use the USB hub seemed an ideal solution to eliminating an external hub the meters with additional red light overload indicator are a nice feature however the product does not directly support Maverick this is not advertised and you need a beta driver to get it up and running don't understand why Akai jumped the gun on this also i could not get all 4 outputs working simultaneously another big let down the system would develop crackling sounds which could only be remedied by a system restart this happened repeatedly when using Mainstage after repeated patch changes after a couple of weeks of agony I returned the unit and got a Focusrite 616. worked right out of the box

        Great Interface for the Money

        By Christopher Ingalsbe

        from Emmaus, PA

Comments about Akai Professional EIE PRO 24-bit Audio/MIDI Interface with USB Hub:

I got this interface a few weeks ago and have been using it regularly for home recording ever since. My experiences with the product so far have been nothing but positive. The specifications for the EIE Pro seem almost too good to be true upon first glance. The maximum bit depth and sample rate capabilities are definitely on the professional end of the market, there are 4 hybrid connectors for easy connection of multiple microphones and quarter inch cable inputs, and the unit looks and feels very solid and high-quality. This interface seems like a great deal when you see the specifications, beautiful design and modest price tag, but how does it hold up hands-on? From my experience so far, it can produce some great results. The audio quality is clean and unadulterated when using any sample rate or bit depth setting. The latency is much better than I expected when running it through my Macbook Pro. I use Logic Pro 9 and I have been using the second smallest buffer setting with no artifacts or distortion. The face of the EIE Pro is easy to navigate and set up for any common recording application and the driver seems to work without a hitch. I really enjoy the mixing dial component for mixing signals going into and out of the computer through the headphone output. The EIE Pro is perfect for my recording needs, but it does have some limitations to its greatness. To start off with, the VU meters can be much harder to monitor than an LED strip. This isn't a huge annoyance because you can monitor input levels in most DAWs, and the VU meters do alert you of clipping with a cool flash of red, but LED strips to gauge signal strength would have been preferable for me. Another minor annoyance is that phantom power is paired off into the first and last two channels. You cannot switch phantom power for an individual input. Similarly, the VU meters must be assigned to the first two or second two inputs. However, all three of these minor annoyances I have with the unit are easily explained by Akai wanting to make a compact and affordable product. I can't complain too much about that. All of these features work flawlessly. Overall the Akai EIE Pro is a great buy for the money. I can't say with any certainty that it would function adequately in a professional environment, but I can't think of a reason why it would not. This unit seems to be designed more for home studio recording because of its price and manufacturer. I can testify that it works more than adequately for that.
