Overview

The Akai APC40 Ableton Performance Controller is designed to be a powerful, intuitive controller for electronic-music performance artists, DJs, hip-hop producers and traditional musicians using Ableton Live on stage and in the studio.

Virtual view
The APC40 talks directly to Ableton Live and Live talks directly to the APC40. This exclusive bidirectional communication makes the Akai Professional APC40 an advanced controller that receives feedback from the software and displays it on its clip matrix of 40 triggers, and on LED rings surrounding each knob. The clip matrix gives you an instant view of clip status: what's loaded, what's playing, and what's being recorded. Each state displays on the matrix in a different color so you quickly get a picture of clip state. Shift your clip focus and get an overview of the clips you have loaded for your set.

The Akai APC40 controller has 16 knobs, each surrounded by a ring of LEDs. These LED rings indicate the currently selected parameters' values, and make seeing your settings on dark stages a breeze. The APC40 controller's advanced visual feedback focuses your performing with focused more on the music and less on squinting at the computer screen. In fact, you might even forget that the computer is there.

Premium controls
Ableton selected Akai Professional as a partner because of its leadership position in great-feeling controllers that are rock solid, rugged, and precise. From the legendary MPC series that changed the way music is made to the industry-standard MPD and MPK controllers, Akai Professional is revered by musicians, DJs, and producers everywhere for creating the feel that powers their creativity. The APC40 is built with a rugged, metal chassis and slip-proof rubber detailing. Knobs and faders are solid and precise for pinpoint performance. It even features a high quality, replaceable crossfader.

Creative control
The Akai APC40 controller comes with a special edition of Ableton Live Lite so you can use it out of the box even if you're new to Live. There's also a free patch that upgrades full versions of Live so if you're already a Live user, you can take full advantage of the APC40.

The APC40 has two banks of eight knobs. The first set controls Global parameters so you'll always have instant access to your main sends, pans, and other essentials. The second bank of eight knobs is dynamically reassigned to the Track you select. You can control eight track parameters at a time, and as you switch channels, the Track knobs follow your focus. You also get special clip-status views and feedback that only the APC40's matrix can display. The matrix is not limited to only 40 clips: you can scroll and shift, enabling access to an unlimited number of cells.

The APC40 has a wide range of controllers. The eight Global knobs can access four banks of controls; the eight Track knobs control nine different track parameters each. This gives you a massive total of 72 controllers that are dynamically reassigned. Channel faders, bus faders, and a crossfader give you smooth control of key values. You have even more control power with special controls including Tap Tempo, Tempo Nudge, record enables, solo/cues and two assignable footswitch inputs.

First off, I must mention that I haven't even discovered the fullest potential of the APC40 yet, but every time I turn it on, I become more and more satisfied with my purchase. I have been making music for years, but just recently started getting into Ableton Live. The APC40 makes clip-launching and effect-manipulating an absolute breeze. Once you spend a few hours getting used to the interface, you can make tracks on-the-fly with little hassle or inconvenience. The buttons feel fantastic, the LEDs really come in handy, and the crossfader is fully replaceable, should anything happen to it. No mapping is required, as this is the first performance controller specifically designed for native use with Ableton Live, but you can re-map it if you want, and seamlessly switch back to the original layout with the click of a button. Whether you are a Live guru or just a fascinated learner like me, you will let out a huge sigh of relief when you buy this thing.

First I will say I love this thing, two of my friends have them and i love playing with them. Just loved the sturdiness of the whole thing. Problem is the current ones out now are seemingly causing a high pitch noise. There are 10 pages of complaints and trial and error problem solving on the ableton forums. here: http://forum.ableton.com/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=117191&start=105 Also when folks call AKAI they are told, thats how its supposed to work! The units my friends own are fine (purchased earlier in the year/end of last year). Just jammed on one 2 hours ago, no noise. I had to put my ear on the thing to hear anything "electronic" the problem I experienced on mine is loud, and even louder when using certain functions like shift (WHICH YOU USE ALL THE TIME). A few have returned theirs multiple times with the same result. I gave mine a week and change to see if I would get over it but, the sound is obnoxious, and like I said I've used others myself that don't do this. The only solution thus far requires you to buy a $25-50 Preset from nativeKontrol, ultimately adding to the price. (and this is no guarantee) Wait until after January, when the next batch comes out, OR buy a NOVATION LAUNCHPAD and NOVATION NOCTURN, both available from uitar Center and cheaper together, PLUS they are very good with customer service. Got my friend a rebate card when his busted rather quickly. I could take the sound if it was my amp or something of the sort, this is supposed to be prosumer studio equipment. Launchpads and kaossilators don't do this! WHEN/IF they solve this issue, this could be a great purchase, depending on how you already use Ableton, or plan to use it. Currently for me all the extra knobs were only half useful, as I don't like using alot of effects thus far, but they were part of the reason I was interested in the first place. It's an all in one playground. Crossfader, levels, clip play, knobs for effects and vst's. Not to mention just being un to play, putting Ableton in your hands. its also built in a sturdy case. I have heard of knobs getting beat up after a year, and I'm pretty sure I watched my friends fader come off today (although he doesn't package it well when doing shows). FINAL THOUGHTS: If I had $500 I'd get a Maschine!!!!! under $300 Novation Nocturn + Launchpad ($50 cheaper than the apc)

AKAI is the best ones in "America" today!!!!!.

By Fernandez Shaw

Live 8.2 works incredibly well onstage, and now you can take that performance to the mix, with APC40 dedicated USB/MIDI controller! Quickly start and stop loops; create new ones; and control levels, plug-in parameters, effects, crossfading, and more--all on the fly. The APC40's 40-button matrix provides the perfect complement to Live's Session View, giving you feedback about which clips are playing, which are loaded with audio, and which you can record into. If you don't need the encoders, the APC20 is available at your "Guitar Center" today!!!!!.

For a price conscious and careful buyer.

By Michael

Typically I don't bother writing reviews but this being one of my first pieces of 'real' pro equipment I felt it was absolutely necessary. I have had the APC-40 for about three months now and so far I'm loving it, it's a wonderful piece of equipment that I really couldn't imagine not having. While it has become a major part of my studio I must warn potential buyers it has it's pros AND it's cons. Pros: it's extremely sturdy feeling, heavy and well made it doesn't feel like it could easily be broken. I really feel like a lot of work went into it's creation and that the parts justify the price. Plug and play with this is a DREAM plug it into Ableton and thanks to it's physical and software design it's instantly ready to go, also tweaking the settings is simple. Cons: If you work on a budget like I do it is a fairly pricey piece of equipment. If you intend on using it with ANY other program it will take a lot of additional programming. The master crossfader on mine started sending ghost midi data rendering the crossfader relatively useless to me, however, Akai stands behind their equipment so they were very agreeable when it came to sending the APC-40 back for repair at NO cost to me. Overall it's an awesome piece of hardware that any dedicated Ableton user should have and the pros far outweigh the cons, I couldn't be happier with it.

Ableton and the APC is incredible. I won't fuss around with the details, but only speak to two important facts. 1) You are a human with two hands and ears. 2) A mouse button accepts one hand. Buy this and feel human again.

A Great controller for live shows and studio

By M.I.D.I

from columbus, ohio

The APC 40 is the perfect sidekick to Ableton Live. If you don't use Ableton, then there's no better time to learn. It has controls for eight channels and a master channel. It is so easy to use. As soon as you plug it in (i use MAC by the way) it automatically adjusts it's settings. The endless LED rings show you the current settings and adjust to where you left off as you move from track to track automatically. The crossfader is able to be replaced if you use it a lot. I've had this product for well over two months and the only complaint that i have for this product is that the little black buttons on top of the knobs pop off rather easily if you're not careful. Great product.

APC40 is the S&@#

By Alexander Devoreaux

from Los Angeles, CA

I usually don't bother to write reviews but I always read them before I buy a product, but in this case I am compelled to. I bought the APC when it came out with Ableton Live so I truly don't know what Live feels like without the APC, but I could not imagine using Live without it. Live is an incredible program and the APC gives you a complete hands on feel of the program. It feels as good as it looks, sturdy and responsive, this controller and Live can take your DJing to another level. I am a pro DJ coming from vinyl and 1200's DJM's etc...take my word for it, this is where the future is and it's here now. Everything else is archaic!!!

AWESOME with Ableton

By J Phoen1x

from Florida / Maryland

I have been using the APC40 since August 09' and I have to say for ableton, there is no better controller. You can re-map the midi controls and use the faders and knobs for anything you want. I use the APC40 along with a KorgNano Kontrol and use those for all my live performances. Faders can break easy, get the extra protection plan, my master fader snapped off some how. Well worth the money, The foundation of all my performances.

Absolutely love it!

By Immerse

from Detroit, MI

The APC40 was amazing right out of the box. Took no time at all to get used to it. The buttons have a great feel to them, an the faders are on the stiffer side *which I prefer*. The knobs are great also. Though I use this with Ableton, I have also remapped it for use with Traktor Pro, and it is awesome. Just enough buttons, and perfect layout for 4 decks of control. I'd highly recommend it!
