  • Good while it lasted

As reviewed by Martian on 12/21/2009

So I got this thing last Christmas. Right out of the box it seemed pretty good, but strange. I used it with FL Studio and was wondering why when I hit one pad, it showed me hitting another. I simply had to change it's operation from the default "BFD Lite" to "MPC 1200." Then it seemed more accurate. However, it's always been a little sluggish. It could be my computer, but with or without additional D/C power it proved a bit laggy (my timing had to be EXCELLENT). I was using a Yamaha 12 Volt D/C adapter, so this may somewhat explain it's subpar timing. But I made some pretty nice beats with it. Could never get it to work with Reason or Ableton (at least not reasonably, not all of the buttons would work and it would always detect 2 of these devices, I only plugged this one in?). Then out of nowhere, a little over a month ago, it just stopped working with my computer. It turns on when plugged in, but when detected my computer says this device has malfunctioned and it does not recognize what it is. So no software I own recognizes it either, and it is now of no use to me. The moral of this story is, if you are going to buy this, PURCHASE THE RIGHT POWER SUPPLY AS WELL. Don't go cheap, it's preferred that you just buy AKAI's 6V D/C Adapter. Otherwise it might end up malfunctioning like mine. Not sure if the power supply or whack manufacturing did it, but I was never awed by this thing anyhow. My producer friend has one with Reason and his Mac Pro and it works fantastic. Not for an old HP with Windows Vista

  • WARNING!

As reviewed by Slightly Disgruntled on 3/27/2007

When you use USB as the power source, the midi out from the MPD24 is disabled and has no settings to correct. The mpd24 becomes your midi device. The ONLY way to use this as a true independent midi controller is to have the power supply, which is not included. Otherwise you have to settle for USB/midi, which is very inaccurate. Akai should have a setting to fix this, or remove the "professional" from the logo.

  • Great....

As reviewed by RFProd. on 5/21/2007

Great machine I have been using this unit for about 2 1/2 mos. I use it as pad controller for Reason and FL Studio as well as controller for Vsts in Cubase. Even though I also have a keyboard controller, I do find myself composing the whole song from this unit bypassing the keys compleately in certain situations. Power supplies are tricky to come by, but if the user goes to any local Radio Shack, take your unit inside have them look at the specs, and they usually have the right adapter and you are on your way!!!!
