Akai Professional MPD18 USB MIDI Pad Controller (105486336)
Availability:

The control feel of the MPC in a super-portable instrument with a compact footprint.

The Akai MPD18 MIDI Pad Controller is an easy way to add genuine MPC pads to your setup. This MIDI-over-USB pad controller for DJs, programmers, producers, and other musicians is built around the pads and controls from Akai Professional's industry-standard MPC series. The MPD18 is an expressive and intuitive instrument ideal for the studio and stage. At the heart of the Akai MPD18 is its bank of 16 velocity and pressure-sensitive MPC pads, an Akai Pro exclusive. You can access 3 different banks of sounds from the MPC pads for a total of 48 sounds at your fingertips. The MPD18 also borrows the MPC series' assignable Q-Link controllers, enabling you to control nearly any parameter in your software in real time. You get an assignable Q-Link fader for natural, hands-on control of your most used parameters, and MPC Note Repeat enables you to quickly input patterns such as hi-hat parts or drum rolls. The MPD18 also has 16 configurable presets so you can program it for the way you work with different hardware and software. The Akai MPD18 sends MIDI information over its plug-and-play USB interface so you can use it with your Mac or PC without installing any drivers. The USB connection even powers the MPD18 so the included USB cable is all you need for portable production. It can control nearly any MIDI software, as well as MIDI hardware, such as synths, sound modules, samplers, sequencers, drum machines, and more.

this midi controller is simply great no bells and whistles, but the mpd18 doesnt need any. if you know what you are doing with midi on your computer and music programs this drum pad is fantastic. the pad quality on this bad boy are 100% top of the line and there pressure sensitive. the price is so great on this item i highly suggest if your looking for a midi controller/drum pad dont even question about buying this just get it ;)

  • simple, compact, & perfect

As reviewed by Mrenc on 1/13/2010

cons: the manual/directions could be a little more informative...short video tutorials would be cool. pros: built & feels great...good size but compact enough to throw in a laptop bag & go. pads are great & very responsive. if you want a controller simply for triggering sounds & loops from your own software/libraries...this is perfect.

  • Practical device with a design flaw

As reviewed by Bruce on 8/4/2010

This controller is fantastic! I have been using it in a lot of ways in the past 2 weeks: lauching clips in Live, playing drums, and even setting the pads to play various scales which is very helpful to come up with a melody over your chords. My only complaint will go to the design of the pads. Out of the box, the pad response is poor and turns barely acceptable with the "Full level" button on. However, the device is simple enough to take apart and you can add electrical tape to close the gap between the sensors and the pads, thereby drastically improving the pad response.
