Akai's MPC series is pretty much the hip-hop essential. The MPC1000 makes it easy to learn enough to get started but has nice features to keep you learning. It's small and powerful and despite lacking a few features I really like on the 2000 version, it's a great machine. There is some kind of magic hoodoo inside this box that makes your samples sound better than what you put in. I used to use it exclusively for hip-hop but now have managed to make weirdo folktronic rock soundscapes with it. Brilliant product, it'll be around for a long time. My only beef is it saves to memory card and when you connect it to a computer via USB the MPC gets locked into slave mode and is useless. Would've been cooler if you could move back and forth between MPC and computer easier - but whatever, those beats are slammin'.
I've had the MPC1000 for about a year now and it is still the main thing I use for my music. I start off the drums with the MPC1000,(Kick, Snare, Hats) then I add a bass with a keyboard thru the midi into the MPC1000, and continue from there. I also record from the midi into the MBox 2/ Protools. With the MPC1000 I am able to create beat quickly and with great sound quality. I have 128mb internal memory and a 1G Compact flash which has every sound I need. I would recommend the MPC1000 because it is easy to learn to use and enless when it comes to creating.
I'm a Recording Artist (Rapper) if you are too then you are all too familiar with dealing with producers. I felt like I was always on someone elses time always trying to get a beat. One day I decided to try the all too popular Fruti Loops which I thought was the best thing since sliced bread. I was wrong after producing on Fruti I just could'nt get my drums, snares, and kicks sounding full and industry quality like the pros. Thats when I decided to give beat machines a shot. I've been doing the music thing for a while and I've came across MPC's in the past. So I knew that this would be the only way to go. I did a lot of research and decided on the 1000. What a gift this little box was. I was kind of overwhelmed when I looked at the manual, but after a couple of weeks of playing around with it (going to the manual and online blogs when I needed help) I found the treasure that I had added to my studio. And I didn't have to loose all my hard earned sounds from Fruti I just convert them to waves and send them to the heaven that is the MPC. This thing made sound I had in Fruti sound sooooo much better and my samples got so cleaner. If you read enough you'll find that anything you want to do as far as making beats you can do with the MPC1000. The way I'd give it up for anything else is if it actually took the thoughts from my head and made the beat for me lol. Word to the wise "You don't need to keep hooking your MPC to the Comp via USB to load your samples just go to record mode plug your sound cables into your mixer/radio/even Ipod and press record the MPC will wait for your signal just play the song and save your sample. Thats just something it took me a while to figure out. GET IT OR CONTINUE TO WONDER WHY YOUR BEATS DONT BANG.
