Innovative USB/MIDI/CV controller with 12 MPC pads and 8 backlit LED touchfaders.

Akai Professional's MAX49 conveniently places revolutionary MIDI and CV control at your fingertips. The MAX49's intuitive layout and included AkaiConnect automatic-mapping software provides you an instant, fully immersive experience with your favorite music software and virtually all your VST plug-ins. With its 49 semi-weighted keys, 12 real MPC pads, groundbreaking LED touchfaders and vintage CV & Gate outputs, the MAX49 combines cutting-edge Akai Pro technology with classic capability for an exceptionally solid music-making experience.

Cutting-edge
One of the MAX49's most distinguished features is its four banks of eight backlit LED touch faders which allow you to assign up to 32 control parameters. Use them just like analog faders by simply dragging your finger along their touch strips, or you can perform instant leaps in any MIDI value from zero to maxed out and everything in between with a simple tap exactly where you want it. Making changes on the fly is now easier than ever.

Classic
The MAX49 is also equipped with four banks of 12 backlit MPC pads, giving you a total of 48 assignable pads, allowing you to integrate legendary Akai Pro production capability into live performances and recording sessions alike. These backlit, velocity sensitive pads come with classic MPC Swing, Note Repeat, Full Level, and navigation controls to give you all the tools you need to create music at your highest level. On top of that, it has USB MIDI, traditional 5-pin DIN MIDI and even Control Voltage and Gate outputs onboard, allowing you to control everything from today's most advanced music software, to analog modular synths from as far back as the 1960s. Built-in Mackie Control and HUI protocols also give you instant compatibility with many industry-standard DAWs.

Complete
When you're ready to get down to business, MAX49 delivers essential controller features with excellence. Its 49 semi-weighted keys with Aftertouch provide you with professional feel, perfect response and full musical expression. Large, centrally positioned transport controls give you straightforward track navigation, and rubberized pitch and modulation wheels allow you instant creative flourishes. MAX49's expanded arpeggiator includes a Latch button as well as eight different time divisions to create sweeping and endlessly varied melodic cascades. A built-in step sequencer allows you to get the music in your head laid down with exacting detail.

Maximum Control
The included AkaiConnect automatic-mapping software has you up and running in your favorite DAW and VSTs in seconds. AkaiConnect has been designed to eliminate the guesswork and give you more time creating and less time setting up controls. Instantly assign MAX49's MPC pads, touchfaders and buttons to your favorite music software plug-ins by simply clicking on the software element you want to control, then touching the knob, pad, fader or button on this special controller.

As reviewed by ERIC WISTRAND _ on 1/7/2013

I've had the MAX49 for a little over a month now, and while it's essentially a great controller, there's a few little niggles that prevent me from giving it five stars. However, what I find lacking may not matter to you, so read on. The keyboard's fairly stiff, even for a semi-weighted keyboard as this is. I don't have issues with this, but if you're used to typical synth action keyboards, it might not be to your liking. The multiple modes are nice, and the HUI and Mackie control modes are great for remote control of your DAW. I haven't used the AkaiConnect automap feature, but that's because I have multiple controllers and mappings for all my plugins with those. The Reason program will save you lots of time if you do any work with Reason- well done. The multiple virtual MIDI ports are nice, as is the ability to send pads, sequencer and keyboard on separate channels. The hardware MIDI port reveals my first issue, though- it won't transmit clock or pass on received clock in program mode. Yeah, you can get around this by using the USB port and retransmit the clock through another interface, but if you want to play a gig using just hardware (as I do sometimes) and leave the computer at home, it creates a problem depending on your setup. The CV outs are the main reason I got this, and while they're a valuable addition and do what they're supposed to do, here lies my second issue. Over MIDI, you can separate the pads, the keyboard and the sequencer and send them over separate channels but with the CV outs, the keyboard and sequencer are linked together. There's a lot of times where I'd just like to drive the CV outs with the sequencer and be able to use the keyboard as a MIDI controller without having the keyboard's output going out through the CV jacks. True- you could use a MIDI/CV intrerface to get by this (and I do have a MIDI/CV interface in my modular). However, I'd rather use that to process the pads for transposition of other sequencers, CV sources and triggers. My other issue? The aftertouch response of the keyboard doesn't have any scaling; you need to do that at the receiving instrument. All my issues could be fixed with software updates, though. In short, if you're using the MAX49 primarily with virtuakl instruments or in the studio, it's a very solid piece. For live use, there's a couple niggles that might irritate you to no end. It's definitely worth buying though, and with the minor fixes I mentioned, it would be unstoppable.
