Product Information

Use your computer and this electronic wind instrument for unprecedented control over your sound.

The Akai Professional EWI USB is an electronic wind instrument for musicians looking for an easy-to-play, easy-to-use controller. Akai Professional's decades of experience in wind and electronic music instruments are rolled into Akai's most user-friendly—and most affordable—EWI ever.

Premium Pedigree
For over 20 years, Akai Professional has studied the art of playing saxophone, clarinet, oboe, bassoon, and other traditional wind instruments and developed electronic wind instruments that enable wind players to enjoy the same expressive control as in an acoustic instrument. Akai Professional designed the EWI USB to give wind players the expressive musical capabilities previously found only in much more expensive instruments.

Professional Performance
EWIs are the only choice for serious wind players looking to make music electronically. While EWI USB is easy and fun to use, it's also powerful, flexible, and—most importantly—reliable enough for use on stage and in the studio by professional musicians.

Computer Control
EWI USB's is extremely flexible because it harnesses your computer to generate its sounds. Its USB interface means that all you need is nearly any Mac or PC and the included EWI USB software, and you're ready to practice, perform, create, and record with a full collection of wind instrument sounds. Aria Player software was produced specifically for use with EWI USB, providing wind players with an unprecedented level of expressive control.

Excellent instrument, decent software.

It's everything you'd expect it to be. It plays very well, the keys are incredibly responsive, it's comfortable, and the breath control responds very nicely. However, 1. The included Aria Software is very quiet, and not very punchy. It goes well with the EWI, and compliments the breath control of the EWI, but it's not really suited for being in a spotlight, as it's rather soft and lacks "strength." Luckily, since the instrument's USB powered, you can go ahead and plug it in to something better (like Reason!) 2. While I said the breath control mechanism responds very well, one thing it does NOT do is respond super-quickly. There's a horn patch in the Aria software, but it's nigh impossible to make it do the signature fortepiano effect that horns do. In other words, sharp dynamic changes are a little difficult to pull off. But hey, for the money, I'm very happy.

Cost Effective Wind Controller

This USB wind controller has a five octave range and is a plug and play device for Mac and Windows. It works in various software hosts and in standalone mode. The advantage it has over Midi keyboards is offering the sostenutos on woodwinds like oboes, english horn, flutes and saxophones. If you have a sound library it will play your entire orchestra and synths adding much to your recordings. Even without woodwind experience the various fingering settings make it easy for anyone. For a cost effective professional Midi controller Akai gives you a lot for a small investment.

Pretty good... need more sounds

I like the way it works. This may just be me, but the octave rollers seem to be pretty sensitive and the volume control is a bit constrained. I remember playing real loud on my sax and on this you just can't get it to play super loud no matter how hard you blow into it. I've not played a woodwind instrument in years so it's gonna take me a while to get it back, but overall it's a very nice piece of equipment.
