Overview

The original Tube MP made pro-caliber tube preamping available to ordinary musicians and home studios. The MP Studio goes a step further by adding a VU meter for better level control and ART's OPL (Output Protection Limiter), which controls and maintains the output peak signal to protect hard-disk recording systems and soundcards. The VU meter reflects the impact of the OPL circuitry when it is activated, which allows more effective fine tuning of the audio signal. It is a valuable tool for recording in project and home studios and can also function as a DI box with impedance matching and preamplification for line-level sources. Includes a 3-year warranty.

I bought this when I was looking for a Tube DI for my bass effects chain, to use when I'm playing a small venue where I go from my bass-effects-DI-board, as my combo/practice amp doesn't have a balanced XLR out, and if I brought just one of my cab's (1- 4X10 Ampeg, & 1- 1X15 Ampeg) with my rack head (SWR SM-500), it would bleed through the drum mics, (Tried it) and running the head with no cabs into the board, even with SWR's tube-pre, really seems to mess with the head's day. Our PA monitors punch my bass back at me without distorting, even on the low B, and we have powered subs with crossovers to split the high register off to the mains. SOLID sound, but a bit to "mechanical" or tin-bright...no tube stank on it. Thought I'd give this a try as it says makes a great tube DI. First time I plugged it in, I cranked her up & let her get nice and burnt in before I started playing through it. Dialed down the knobs to blend with everyone else for sound check with the board tech, it didn't sound like an OLD Ampeg tube-pre/tube-power SVT head, but it took the face peeling bite off my bass and gave it a slightly warmer, softer smack in the face. We tried different configurations and settings, worked well in some, some not so much. I did notice the tube didn't really have the clarity, after a set, that it did when it wasn't being "worked". So, I dug into "Cannibal" (the bag I keep all spare parts, and parts I've cannibalized from gear over the years) and found 3 12AX7 tubes, one used, 2 new. Tried the Stovek, ehh, put in the new Groove Tubes, much better, but a little thuddy on the low end, finally JJ Gold Pin. BINGO!!! Nice even rounded tone. Each application is different, the Stovek might be rockin for what you're doing, just didn't ring my bell, I play only passive basses as I go through a 10 band EQ and tube-pre driver pedal, if you use onboard preamp, roll off the low boost and the Groove Tube might be your thing. Anyway, took their tube and put it in the JJ box and marked what it was in case of tube breakdown mid show (has happened in my Messa and SWR heads, neither of them cost $40.00...), and away we went. From the first night we used that set-up, I started getting compliments on how it cut through, but was more "rounded", not as sharp and piercing. Play everything from Collective Soul to Dave Matthews, P-Funk to James Taylor, Stevie to originals. Durability, I can't speak on, as I haven't had it long, but a quick, simple, cheap way to enhance your sound for the better? You won't go wrong.

This is a preamp. What more can you say? It does what it says it's going to do. It's a bit noisy, the sound is ok, and the rest is pretty straight forward. For what you pay, it's a good value. It doesn't sound like a $300-500 preamp, so just understand that this is an entry level type of unit. If this is your first preamp for recording, then you should be happy.

big bang for the buck

Comments about Art Tube MP Studio Mic Preamp:

the preamp gives you amazing clear highs and helps you cut through the mix like butter. its a great tool when your going straight to the mixer and help you send a stronger signal to the house. so that the person running the sound does not have you running so hot causing unwanted distortions and spikes.

So Good For The Money

By SurferJoe

from Anza, CA

Comments about Art Tube MP Studio Mic Preamp:

I knew I needed some sort of preamp, but I was a little freaked by the thoughts of trying to use one. This took all that fear away. Not only is this a really great pre-amp, but it is also a good pro-unit too. The DI ability makes me wonder how I did without it for so long. A very easy learning curve and there's LOTS of people online who know how to use one if you get stumped. I run some solo-mic with it and it fills the tone and peaks very well and won't go overboard and fry something downstream either.

death buzz beware

By Jack

from Denver

Comments about Art Tube MP Studio Mic Preamp:

I bought this unit to warm up vocal for use in live audio. From the moment I plugged the unit into a wall till the moment I had returned it to guitar center, I could not get the unit to function properly for any duration of time. I guess its a what did you expect situation but there was an issue with my unit not grounding properly and the unit would send bursts of ground loop noise through my system. Didn't matter how I set it up... xlr to xlr, xlr to 1/4. Or even 1/4 to 1/4... can make for an extremely frustrated sound Guy when you have an audible buzz in the middle of silence. The other side, this unit did wonders to the vocals I had it attached to.. I would have kept if minus the issue I had with mine. I can't even go into how I would feel if I had taken it into my studio and tried recording off it only to have a take ruined by the death buzz. Wont recommend or buy again.

Not to bad..... But

By Ty Collum

from Tempe, AZ

Comments about Art Tube MP Studio Mic Preamp:

I really thought this thing was neat. it has a cool warm tone , but i did get a low hum when i with hit the boost, i was very stoked that my VU meter worked thought i might go and get the more expensive ones just to see if they are better but IF I WAS YOU i would get this one to try it out. i mean yes tube is a great way to go but not everyone enjoys that warm sound, i didnt so much enjoy running my eletric through it but my acoustic did have a very beautiful sound, works great with standard Condensor. you might want to consider the bang for the buck... Anyone who says its flawless or The best thing ever... really needs to look at the equitment there using or there just a sales guy trying to get you to by it. if you do get it go to guitar centers store get it with a return policy and test it out in every way shape or form. you will get the results you want but you never know Preamps are really up to the ear and quality but i do recommend this for beginners

Great for instruments too!

By Kyle

from Atlanta, GA

Comments about Art Tube MP Studio Mic Preamp:

Yes, I am one of those people who use this for his guitar. I have to tell you that it sounds great! I have a big pedal board that consists of a wah wah pedal, a multi-effects unit and 2 different distortion pedals all going into this preamp and then into my amp (a 1982 Peavey Citation Mark IV [solid state] with a 4x12 Laney cabinet). I use this for an over-all volume level to my whole pedal board because with all these pedals I would have to turn each pedal up and down individually without this thing. I also use it for the peak button - OPL (which is fantastic by the way!) and to, obviously, make my tone more tube-sounding. All in all whether you're using this for a mic or an instrument, it sounds great! I haven't had any problems with this yet (I've had it since December and I've played many places since then) but I'm sure if you take good care of it it will take good care of you.

Sparkling hiss and growling buzz

By Loko Hank

from Evansville, IN

Comments about Art Tube MP Studio Mic Preamp:

Looking for a way to add annoying hiss to your recording project? Are your vocal track too clear and clean sounding? Look no further than the ART MP! Use the input and output knobs to achieve the perfect amount of buzzes and crackles you desire. Plus, the on-board gain boost adds a whopping 20dbs of hiss for your listening displeasure. If you want nice warm tube tones, look elsewhere, pilgrim. Seriously, I don't understood the point of this product - as far as using it as a tube mic preamp. It may work fine as a DI box for instruments, but why they equipped it with XLRs is beyond me. The first one I bought was a refurb and I thought it was defective, so I returned it and bought a brand new one. Same hiss, same buzzing sounds. Returned it too. The only reason I gave this a one star rating is because they don't allow anything lower. It should be rated as a -5. Completely useless.

Amazing tube sound for the price

By Elizabeth Maplesden

from Morrisville, PA

Comments about Art Tube MP Studio Mic Preamp:

I've had this preamp for nearly a year, and it's an amazing little box. It's great for electric guitar or bass. The +20 dB gain switch provides the perfect amount of "singing" distortion in combination with my amp-modeling pedal, with the signal routed from the TubeMP to the clean channel of a Fender amp, or another effect box. Sans +20 gain is good too, especially for singing. And it sounds great miking my acoustic guitar with an instrument mic. They're such a good price, I think I may get one or two more!

Sounds great -- replace the tube with the best you can afford

By w l williams

from Pasadena CA

Comments about Art Tube MP Studio Mic Preamp:

I replaced the Chinese tube with a NOS Telefunken 12AX7 and it really improved the sound. It's not the quietest mic preamp I have ever used. You got to be careful about how much gain you use -- enough gain to cover up the noise but not some much that you are driving it hard. Jazz vocals are really much better, more lush and with a nice bloom. Don't know about anything else bu I plan to try guitar and keyboards. Can't tell about quality and reliability yet. Have only had it one day.

Comments about Art Tube MP Studio Mic Preamp:

Some would say I'm insane for running this preamp thru an Apogee Duet 2, but I need to add a little grit to my signal chain. I was running an AT4040 into the Duet 2 and the results were ultra prestine and lifeless, so Iadded the ART Tube MP Studio into the mix and it worked out great! It added just a touch of distortion/warmth to the signal and gave me the vibe I was looking for. I did change out the factory tube for a Tung Sol. I believe this increased the overall gain a bit. I'm happy with the results and I didn't break the bank! Ignore the gear snobs and try it for yourself.

Picked up this pre to amplify (phantom power) a condenser mic. I have it connected to a Native Instruments Audio 8 interface, running into Ableton and I am more than pleased with the results. Keep in mind when setting this little guy up that you need to balance your levels and set up your latency/buffering to get the sound just right. It's all about balance right?! Enjoy!

      A Great Buy!

      By Andrew

      from Chicago, IL

Comments about Art Tube MP Studio Mic Preamp:

I've had this pre-amp for over 8 months now and it's done nothing but deliver great results. I use it with a Sterling Audio ST51 condenser mic and it sounds fantastic. Very full sound that is of radio DJ quality. I've also recently discovered that it works wonders with guitars as well! On a clean channel, it gives a nice volume boost. But what I enjoy it for is boosting the signal to clip sooner with both amp and pedal distortion. If you need a pre-amp for basic home recording (like myself) or you want a nice kick to your guitar's dirt, get it. Don't think about it. Get it, because it's worth every dollar.

      Great :)

      By Cameron Simpson

      from Michigan

Comments about Art Tube MP Studio Mic Preamp:

My band just recorded our first EP and I used this box as a DI for my American made Precision Bass, the sound is amazing through this box, of course the tube was replaced with a better one, but tubes aren't that expensive, its an easy fix. My bass sounded better then it did through my sansamp DI, brighter and snappier, for slap. And it sounded great with finger style. This is a great little box, the studio engineer told me he only used it for bass, everything else he ran through his MacBook pro with recording software. Don't be afraid of hiss and buzz, just install a new tube and it'll be fine.

      Noisy

      By Sean Sprague

      from Mesa AZ

Comments about Art Tube MP Studio Mic Preamp:

The VU meter did not work on the first unit I received, and it seemed noisy. I took it back for a replacement, only to find that the noise was apparently part of the design. I played around with it a bit, and discovered that the output volume control works like an impedance match (more so than most devices I have worked with). After adjusting the noise with the output level, I was able to reduce the SNR down to around -60db with no input. The sound is nice and adds a bit of warmth to the mic. All in all, and acceptable pre-amp for the money spent.

      Great for the Price

      By Richard Egnot

      from Materials Park, Ohio

Comments about Art Tube MP Studio Mic Preamp:

Yes, it's a little noisy, especially when you kick on the gain boost, which is a must for low-output mics and/or DIs. However, bear in mind the massive amount of noise and hiss you can hear on all of the tube/tape recorded hits of the 70's and earlier. This isn't that bad whatsoever, and i'd assume that no one who picks one of these up is going to be using it for million-dollar sessions. The phase inverter will come in handy for multi-mic situations, but it will also give you some funky-sounding effects on vocals if you use it with a solo mic. The built-in phantom power is a MAJOR plus, especially since i've been considering picking up a standalone +48 unit for about a year. I replaced the brandless Chinese tube with a Russian Electro-Harmonix, because Russia. This unit sounded incredible with one SM57, an acoustic guitar and vocals, as well as a small hall reverb from the console I was using. It sounded like it was ready to go on an album.

I thought this might sweeten up the vocals through my PA head.
I was a little wary that the three boxes of the in stock unit looked a bit shopworn.
Unit did little to sound and needed the gain cranked way up to move the VU meter/be audible.
Also, curious this model is not shown on the ART website.
