Overview

The original Tube MP made pro-caliber tube preamping available to ordinary musicians and home studios. The MP Studio goes a step further by adding a VU meter for better level control and ART's OPL (Output Protection Limiter), which controls and maintains the output peak signal to protect hard-disk recording systems and soundcards. The VU meter reflects the impact of the OPL circuitry when it is activated, which allows more effective fine tuning of the audio signal. It is a valuable tool for recording in project and home studios and can also function as a DI box with impedance matching and preamplification for line-level sources. Includes a 3-year warranty.

I've read a lot of neagtive reviews regarding this unit being too noisy, and emitting static and hiss. All of this is true. It can give off the most annoying hiss/hum/buzzing sounds...if you dont know what you're doing. I almost gave this thing a 1 star due to all the background noise I was hearing. I also couldnt figure out why or how this thing got so many positve reviews. I started to wonder if my unit was defective or if most people just couldnt hear the noise i was hearing. However, after spending about an hour or so tweaking the settings, I figured out how to find optimum results...

TURN DOWN THE GAIN ON YOUR INTERFACE!!!

It was the gain on my interface that was causing 90% of the hiss I was hearing. And when I say turn down the gain, I really mean turn down the gain! I have my gain/volume knob just barely turned up, and it makes a world of difference.

ALSO...

I have the gain button as well as the phantom power button on the preamp pushed in (and the other two buttons pushed out), and it seemed to clear up some of the noise as well.

You also need to find a wall outlet in your house that doesnt make this unit buzz. It's susceptible to that.

Bottom line to make this thing sound good...

-Find an outlet that doesnt make the unit buzz.

-Turn the gain knob on your interface way, way, way down.

-Tweak the output/input knobs on the preamp.

-Adjust the buttons on the preamp to whatever yields the best resulting sound.

-Try to be patient!!!

(If anyone is interested in my chain, this is how I have it setup...

Sm57 running into the preamp, preamp running into my interface, interface running into my laptop)

Overall, im giving this unit 4 stars. For the price, you simply cannot beat it. It makes my overall tone sound much, much warmer. The quality isnt as flat as it used to be.

While i've heard nothing but good about this company, i'm having serious issues right out of the box.. levels seem to be consistent for a few minutes, then go mad, up or down, has ruined a few good recordings in my first days trial, not happy with this device, wont hold a level once dialed in.. a working one might be really nice, i hope i got a lemon at this point, will test the customer service..

Comments about Art Tube MP Studio Mic Preamp:

So yeah right out of the box this piece of junk did not work. All it could do was power on. No sensing of a signal from INPUT whatsoever, whether it be a line or instrument in. So yeah. It is only good for being a paperweight, or something to put in the fishtank for fish to swim around.

So far it sounds good. I plug my vocal mic directly into it then my at2020 mic goes into a dbx 266 compressor then into my interface.

Comments about Art Tube MP Studio Mic Preamp:

My first purchase from musicians friend (intercontinental transplant) and my second ART preamp. I use them in my portable studio setup and as DIs for the laptop when I play live in a band setting... I love recording vox through them and run them pretty 'hot' when I do this - the output limiter protects the interface so you can add as much saturation as you want... there is a bit of low end noise when you push the gain but can be EQd out as much lower than vocals/ mic'd instruments... Very solid construction and light enough to stay still with Velcro tape. Sounds much better than any saturator plugin I have ever met. Switchable phantom power is also a nice feature. I have noticed slight differences in response across both units but is to be expected (and celebrated imo) in analog gear.

Comments about Art Tube MP Studio Mic Preamp:

Some would say I'm insane for running this preamp thru an Apogee Duet 2, but I need to add a little grit to my signal chain. I was running an AT4040 into the Duet 2 and the results were ultra prestine and lifeless, so Iadded the ART Tube MP Studio into the mix and it worked out great! It added just a touch of distortion/warmth to the signal and gave me the vibe I was looking for. I did change out the factory tube for a Tung Sol. I believe this increased the overall gain a bit. I'm happy with the results and I didn't break the bank! Ignore the gear snobs and try it for yourself.

Comments about Art Tube MP Studio Mic Preamp:

I was looking for an inexpensive mic preamp, and the description of this one sounded pretty good. Unfortunately, the one I got buzzes. Even when there's no mic plugged into it and it isn't doing anything, a distinct hum comes from the device.

Comments about Art Tube MP Studio Mic Preamp:

Following the manufacturer's instruction to eliminate or reduce hum did nothing to get rid of the unwanted noise. Even adding a Behringer loop, hum-eliminating box did nothing. And the hum was definitely caused by this unit. Switching it our with different preamps eliminate the hum completely. In all fairness, I did not try one of the manufacturer's hum-eliminating solutions which was to remove the ground pin from the male end of the microphone's XLR cable. If you've tried that solution before and it reduced hum for you in other applications, then this unit might work for you. But, also, the unit heated up too much and too fast.

Comments about Art Tube MP Studio Mic Preamp:

I purchased this as a preamp Di for my double bass which I play through a Shadow SH 951 and it sounds awesome. It adds a full body sound. I also plugged our electric bass player who usually plays through an imp2 Di straight to the FOH in to it and it adds a nice punch and boost.
A lot of reviews talk about buzz which is easily taken care of if you put the input around 12 O-clock and the output at around 9 O-clock and turn on the +20db. This formula works great for recording. for live it doesn't seem to mater since the buzz is in a lower frequency and it seems to hide itself.
The only concern is the power supply is kinda wonky. I tried to use my 1spot but all it did was light up the vu meter.
                  I'll probably purchase more
