The ART TUBE MP Project Series Preamp for Microphone and Instrument can also make your voice sound fabulous, warmed and made silky smooth by the genuine 12AX7A tube inside. A makeover of the popular original, the Tube MP features an ultralow-noise discrete mic preamp front end that has an extremely flat, wide frequency response and can handle very low and high signal levels with minimum coloration. High impedance instrument input bypasses the mic preamp circuitry for a shorter signal path. External power supply minimizes AC line noise and hum.
Input gain control and switch maximizes dynamic range of input and lets you control how hard you drive the tube. Switchable input impedance on the XLR in optimizes mic response. Bessel switchable low-cut filter removes rumble and wind noise. Set at 40Hz, it won't overly affect bass tonality. XLR input features phantom power of +48V DC from a very quiet internal high voltage power supply.
The Tube MP Project Series Preamp has an FET limiter with fast attack and musical release times that protect other gear in the chain without compression. This allows you to maximize the dynamic range of your signal before converting to digital. A phase invert switch lets you switch signal polarity at the source to minimize cancellation. Output control after the tube and limiter matches output level to a wide variety of systems. Added output section at the end of the signal path has enhanced signal drive capability to both output jacks.

I purchased this sweetheart of a preamp for multiple uses. First, I just loved the look of it: the way it is solidly constructed (metal--not junky plastic); straightforward buttons and lights; small, compact shape that made it great for travelling. Second, I enjoyed reading what many were describing as a warm, vintage sound for mics and instruments. Videos also demonstrated effectively the sound of this preamp with a mic, electric guitar, and electric bass. I use this preamp in my studio for creating a different sound with the mic. My partner uses it to practice with his bass. Equipped with Mogami gold instrument cable and a monster instrument cable, the bass sounds fantastic. Low noise is really hardly any noise at all in both situations. The impedence imput has been especially great for the electric bass--it won't take the buzz out of a poor connection or a short, but it will improve the rumble sound very well when used with the filter. I don't mind the lack of a voltage monitor for either purpose. The lights tell me enough. With the right setup, this preamp does exactly what it claims to do. If you don't hear how the preamp works, then alter your setup a bit--get better cables just for a starter. Oh, the vintage sound? I can best describe it as very smooth and warm, a bit ethereal (or, in other words, one might think it has a slight bit of reverb to soften not over-echo sounds). It is also very easy to learn quickly. I just hope that ART keeps making equipment like this preamp--and I still love the way it looks.
This little pre amp was just what i needed to get the sound levels i was looking for. I am a beginner home studio guy, and i am using an Mbox3 with pro tools to record acoustic guitars and vocals mainly. I wanted to boost my signal and this amp does the job very nicely so far ! I am looking forward to using it !
Good preamp but great when you change to a better tube. I tried it then changed the Chinese tube to a JJ 12AX7 and it made a big difference. Would like to have sixteen of them in my system. I use the Tube MP into a compressor into my recorder. It works great for any mic or direct signal.
I am very impressed with the quality of this preamp. I picked it up to do comparison testing on some audio equipment using an Audio Precision Portable One Plus Analyzer. The base line tests on the preamp exceeded my expectations for such an affordable preamp. The frequency response was flat within 0.1dB from 80Hz - 20KHz, and less than -0.5dB at 20Hz. THD+N was lower than 0.05% as advertised. The only negative I would mention is that there are only 4 LEDS to indicate the signal level (-15, -7, 0dB, and Clip).
Have been recording nylon guitar into ProTools HD system with it now for about two weeks. Plugging a small condenser mic in the Tube MP project series and I honestly say that it has improved my sound from using the Mackie pres on their mixer. With tasty post production the end result is impressive. I've worked in pro studios and have heard the expensive gear, but this is a nice sounding addition in my home studio. It has a clean and honest sounding result when playing back the recorded track. It has sensible options with the phase switch and phantom power switch. Why pay the boo-koo bucks when something works this well?
This tube preamp is for real. You do not have to spend $129 for a tube preamp, unless you want some eye candy! If you need a tube and your on a budget this will work hands down. Plus this is a Vacuum tube, I did my research. If you want your vocals to be warm and sit upfront in the mix make sure you read the little manual that comes with the tube mp otherwise you will run into loud and noisy problems. Hint: XLR into the tube mp, TRS (1/4) output into your audio interface, or mixer is the best way to go. Naturally you would think XLR In, XLR out is the best connection but it's not. TRS (1/4) cuts the gain by least 20% for more control of the dynamic range.
I am no pro at recording and have been using a cheap Line 6 interface the entire time I've been recording. I would use the Hi-Z input on the interface for using guitar VST effects such as ReValver and such, but my sound kept coming out cold and un-lively in the mix. The mic input also wasn't working for me and sounded very thin and cold. When I saw this ART preamp I decided to buy it immediately since it really isn't expensive at all. Immediately I noticed a difference in my sound. My guitars sounded warmer and punchier, my vocals sound crisper and more "full," I even used the preamp when miking my Mesa Mark III and that sounded incredible. Great product from a great company. There is also a USB version of it with a built in recording interfacee but I heard it has latency issues.
