Overview

The AKG C 414 XL II condenser microphone is the successor to the famous AKG C 414 B-TL II mic. The AKG C 414 XL II mic shows the unique sonic signature of the highly sought after AKG C 12 which enables lead vocals and solo instruments to be placed even in a dense mix. The unrivaled up-front sound is also well-known for distant miking applications like classic music recording or drum ambience miking.

The XL II mic version differs from the XLS version in one major respect-the capsule. Both the slight presence boost and the impressive spatial reproduction is similar to the legendary AKG C 12 microphones.

The AKG C 414 XL II offers 9 pickup patterns for you to choose the perfect setting for every application. For live-sound applications and permanent installations, all controls can be disabled easily enabling trouble-free use. A Peak-Hold LED displays even shortest overload peaks.

AKG ships the C 414 XL II microphone complete with carrying case, pop filter, windscreen, and a spider-type shock mount.

For over 60 years, leading musicians and engineers have used legendary AKG microphones to capture their sound so their audience hears every nuance. The C 414 family has been one of the world's most widely-used and respected studio and stage microphones in audio history. This microphone is truly incredible. I've been working with it now for about a year and it never failed to upset everyone in the studio. It has awesome accuracy and great frequency response. We used it on almost every application in the studio...vocals, drums, guitar cabs, omni room mic, etc...never failed to add a clear track. Plus, with the digital switches for selecting different polar patterns, low cut, and attenuation pad, you can adjust the mic to your exact needs before even touching your console to adjust the tone. We recorded the same sessions with different mics and even some that cost $3000+ didn't sound as good. This is a great microphone that can do anything you need and is WELL worth the mone
Selectable polar patterns, low cut, and attenuation make it incredibly easy to get any sound you want from any source
Extremely well made. Solid built quality, heavy. Transient response and frequency accuracy is amazing
A lot of mics 3 or 4 times more expensive don't sound this good. Such a great value for what you get

I am tempted to rate this lower than three stars because I don't like the way it sounds... The only thing stopping me is that I know it's a classic mic and I've heard it sound especially good on one person's voice. If you have a bunch of mics already and just want to broaden your palate, I can comfortably say this is a decent mic to pick up. But if you are looking for one great vocal mic, or even a pair of overheads for drums, I would go a different direction. I have used the AKG 414 as a vocal mic and a pair of them as overheads. On vocals, they lack some sparkle on top. Similarly, when putting them on overheads, it just doesn't impress me. As far as overheads are concerned, I've moved to a pair of Shure Beta 57As and that sounds great. Those also sound good on vocals, which is what they were designed for, I think. They're only $500 for a pair.

Comments about AKG C414 XL II Reference Multi-Pattern Condenser Microphone:

I'll keep this brief: I've read, overall, many good to great things about this microphone, and I agree with most of what I heard about it. I was very impressed by the clear sound it had. This will be my go to mic for most things I record, but especially vocals. Many features to use and get used to, so it's well worth the money and effort to learn and experiment with.

Comments about AKG C414 XL II Reference Multi-Pattern Condenser Microphone:

First, the mic is off the chart. I first used it in Rosewood Studios in Tyler. After that I had to have one at home. Clear, true and absolutely delivers. Multiple patterns are a plus.

Having said all that, Cam helped me with this Mic. I want go into all the things he did. Just say he is an incredible customer service agent that makes things work. My first purchase of this product I said, "OK dung it don't work". Cam fixed that so quick it freaked me out. GREAT JOB Musician Friend getting this guy. I will and have already told everyone about your great service, because of Cam.

Comments about AKG C414 XL II Reference Multi-Pattern Condenser Microphone:

This mic is the real deal. You can't possible go wrong with it. I will never ever sell this mic. Whether you are operating a home studio or commercial facility, this mic will not disappoint you. I actually own two of these. There are usually arguments about the importance of owning multiple mics in ones mic locker....well, this mic is technically 9 top notch mics IMO. It performs flawlessly in different pickup patterns. The bass cut really helps eliminate unwanted noises in your tracking. I don't record in the best of rooms, so that really saves me from my air conditioners noise and diverse sources of low frequency noise. This is about the third review I am writing in my life. I don't do this unless I experience stuff for myself and I am moved beyond satisfaction. I will get a third C414 with time. :)

Industry Workhorse Earns its Reputation Honestly

              By Timothy Taylor

              from Bristow, Virginia

Comments about AKG C414 XL II Reference Multi-Pattern Condenser Microphone:

I bough this mic about a year ago, and can say with all honesty, it has been a standout performer for anything I have put it use on. For acoustic guitar it's clarity, and definition are amazing. You can hear every detail, and yet it is not harsh in any way. The numerous polar patterns allow you to taler the function to suit your needs with no loss of quality or spaciousness. With a good preamp it has a wonderful airy sound much like a u87 or Manley, and it is simply excellent for vocals. Male or female vocals really pop though this, but it DOES require your performance to be spot on. If you are slightly off it will pick it up! It is useful for just about anything in the studio you can think of, including picking up cymbals from overhead. It is one of the best Microphones I own, and I would put it up against the Neumann TLM103 or the Sterling Audio Ocean Way Signature Series mic, as well as the Neumann KMS104. It blows RODE, Sputnik, or lower level Sterlings out of the water. I own or have used in my studio all these mics, so can speak to it with absolute authority. It is durable, rugged, and has launched the careers of many a fabled performer, and for my money is one of the best values going. DO get a top quality heavy stand for use with this Mic. It does pick up whatever is going on in the environment, and mic stand noise can be maddening. I use the ultimate support boom, which retails for $199, and has a solid base, super thick pole and overhead boom.
