  • Great Mic all Around

As reviewed by chris smith on 6/24/2013

I bought this mic over year ago without knowing about the Rodes NT-1 Condenser Mic that many have claimed is and exceptional mic. I have used the Rodes NT-1 and i love that mic as well. But this mic has a lot of qualities the Rodes doesn't. If a quality preamp is used and this mic is used in a surrounding acoustically suitable,,, this mic picks up amazing tone qualities and all over acoustic sound. I use Cubase as my recoding software. I also use the Steinberg MR816x Interface Pre Amp combo and i get amazing results. Vocal it is a great mic but sometimes depending on who your recording vocals with it is not a choice id make as a versatile mic instrument wise and vocals. Vocalist with a softer projection,,,, this mic is amazing to record with, with that being said. Personally i love using this mic for acoustic guitars. Doesn't matter about the quality of the instrument. It picks up exactly what you want within a decent range. Ive also used this mic for an added reverence in drum recording and it works amazingly for that as well. Over all a good choice!

  • Very clean sounding mic

As reviewed by Voyce on 9/8/2008

of course there are better products out there but this AKG 420 has what it takes to capture clean vocals. I am running it thru a Presonus Eureka with the optional AD192 expansion card to get pristine clear quality at 24/96k. The Eureka really makes this mic shine though. Without it and just placing it thru my M-Audio's Firewire 410's preamp gave kind of a boring sound. It was too flat like the vocals had no presence. Awesome microphone when paired with a very clean but Class A compliant pre amp/compressor. I especially love the fact that you can switch the polar patterns but I wish that it had only a 10db pad instead of 20db. I recommend this product to anyone wanting to get some clean vocals for their tracks just not by itself though with crappy preamps. AKG has very dependable quality products.
