On stage or in the studio the AKG D 112 Kick Drum Mic is the microphone to use to clean up the dirty low down. Stays free of distortion even at high sound pressure levels. Solid and powerful response below 100Hz. Very low diaphragm resonance, relatively narrow-band rising high-frequency response at 4kHz, and extremely robust construction are other outstanding features. Also works great for bass cabs, trombone, and other low-frequency instruments.
Channel Strips of the Stars: Ronan Chris Murphy
World-class producer/engineer/mixer Ronan Chris Murphy's credits include King Crimson, Steve Morse, Terry Bozzio, Victor Bisetti, Gregg Bissonette, Tony Levin, and projects with members of Tool, Ministry, Weezer, Dishwalla, and Yes. A huge fan of A Designs Audio, Ronan was kind enough to share some of his drum-recording signal chains:
"Well all of the drums for Terry Bozzio's Jazz trio were recorded with all A Designs Audio solid state preamps. For drum overheads I used Shure KSM32 condenser mics (#270141) into a Pacifica; for kick drums, AKG D112s into A Designs Pacificas (189903). (I prefer the Shure Beta 52 (#270267) for kick but they (D112s) were pre-mounted inside Terry's (Bozzio) kick drums. Actually I have used the Shure KSM32 into Pacifica combo on tons of great drummers, including Terry Bozzio, Victor Bisetti (Los Lobos), Gregg Bissonette (Santana, David Lee Roth), and Pat Mastelotto (King Crimson, Mister Mister, The Rembrandts)."

When looking for a bass drum microphone I was never sure which one to get because almost all of them in the same price range seemed the same quality wise. Luckily, I got to try out several microphones at a local venue which had 3 other high quality ones except for the AKG D 112.
They sounded good but not as great as I was expecting. Since my band's first gig was coming up, I decided to buy and try the AKG D 112 becasue it was recommended in a recording tutorial DVD I have.
When I got it was the day of the gig and was amazed at how great it sounded compared to the other 3 microphones the venue had for drummers. My friend owns the venue and told me he decided to sell the other microphones and bought an AKG D 112.
Other drummers I meet tell me how much they like the sound of my bass drum live and from our demo.
I was looking around for a good kick drum mic. I looked at a few different brands and borrowed different mics from friends. I made three or four separate recordings of me hitting my kick drum with a different mic. I honeslty can say, the AKG D112 was just outstanding. It gave my kick a pro-like sound. It was not to punchy and had a quality softness too it that is very hard to get with almost all other mics. D112s are standard in the world of kick drum mics. But people have them because they are good. The price is just right on these guys. A D 112 sounds great on bass cabinets too. I have not personally used it on a Bass amp, but I know people who have and they have nothing but great things to say about the D112. Getting one of these is always a good choice. It is a great mic to have sitting in your mic cabinet in your studio for use on a large variety of different things. A D 112 truly stands above the rest... Let all other kick mics rest in peace!
I was using a Beta 52 for my kick Drums until a friend of mine told me about the akg D112's sound. This thing is on fire guys, I had my channels at a certain level for the 52's on the mixer, when I purchased the D112's and hooked them up. I had to turn the channels down, The Mikes had so much response it's not even funny.
Incredible, Awesome Power and punchy Attack that I was looking for Produced by these Puppies. If you give these mikes a try, you'll love-em.
