A great mic, but a little expensive

If I would say one thing about this mic it would be that it does an excellent job capturing a vocal track. The pads are a great benefit, especialy for reducing the bass signal. This mic is excellent for capturing vocals and acoustics. The only problem I have is the cost, you can come very close to the same quality with a mic half of the price. Now with that said this mic is excellent and if you can afford it you will be impressed with the results.

If you ger one microphone

This is the one. I own a bunch of microphones including a Brauner VM1. for less than $1000 this microphone will allow you to record almost anything. It is really flat, adjustable pattern, excellent sound. I've used it on strings, guitar, drum kit overhead, horns, and even vocals. Classic microphone that will not let you down. Get a good preamp to get the most out of this one!

The one MUST HAVE mic

If you only have one microphone in your studio, it should be the AKG C414B. Evolved from microphones that are heard on almost all significant recordings, the C414B will accurately capture every instrument, with the ability to have instruments sound differently when recorded using the variable pickup patterns (each of the 5 patterns will sound different, thus giving 5 different timbres for the mic). I have used a few different mics for recording (some cheaper than others), and now I ONLY use this mic. I love it and use it on everything that our band records; drums, bass, guitars, vocals. My acoustic guitar sounds beautiful, and the mic can take loud enough volumes to be placed inside the kick drum for awesome low end. So, if you can afford this microphone, and you are serious about accurate recordings, BUY IT! Not only is it the best, most variable mic on the market, the free case, shockmount, and pop screen save you a hundred or two dollars over the main competitor that only offers one pickup pattern.

Instant Classic ~

I added this mic to my collection in anticipation of a huge project that unfortunately fell through. I knew about its predecessor?s reputation, so instead of returning it I kept it around. On the first chance I got I grabbed it out of the ol' mic closet and hooked it up. As I stepped back into the control room the mic stand fell...CRACK !!!! There goes the shock mount, shattered in a million pieces. This is a new redesigned shock mount (H85) from AKG for the new 414's. Clearly not a work horse as one would lead to believe. The mic sounds great though, especially on acoustic guitars. The 3 KHz boost on the B-XL II can be recreated with EQ. The LED indicators are pretty neat and impress the clients. I managed to strap the original inner housing of the shock mount to a metal outer housing of another, instant upgrade ! Hope you can afford to enjoy one, just be prepared to replace the fragile shock mount.

Even though this mic might seem a little too expensive, it is close as you will ever get to the U87 for the price, so it is well worth it. You will also find that with the five different patterns are great and ideal when recording background vocals when there is only one person doing the vocals, each pattern will give you a different sound for your recording. So really it is not over priced if you are serious about recording. This is the mic to have, go get it!
