Gibson 2013 Les Paul Traditional Electric Guitar (H90724)

A solid mahogany body without weight relief, '57 Classic pickups and '50s rounded neck

The 2013 Les Paul Traditional wraps several crucial features into a classic Les Paul that always just seemed right, echoing the specs of guitars that rocked the world through the 1980s and ’90s. The New Les Paul Traditional’s tonewood combination retains the great sound of the original Les Paul Standard, with an unchambered back for a thick, meaty tone and superb sustain.

Its rounded late-’50s neck shape reflects one of the most popular profiles ever used on a Les Paul. Two PAF-style humbucking pickups with Orange Drop tone capacitors give no end of power and finesse. All this, and the new Les Paul Traditional looks outrageous with its Grade-AA figured maple top beneath a high-gloss nitrocellulose lacquer.

The Les Paul Traditional is built on a foundation of the same traditional tonewood combination that helped to make the Les Paul Standard legendary when it first arrived six decades ago. A carved solid Grade-AA figured maple top lends bite and articulation to the sound while looking great in the process, and a solid, mahogany back without weight relief contributes superb warmth and depth.

A quarter-sawn, Grade-A mahogany neck is glued in and carved in a comfortably rounded late-’50s profile that measures .900” at the 1st fret and 1.00” at the 12th, and topped with a bound Grade-A rosewood fingerboard with 22 medium-jumbo frets and traditional trapezoid inlays. Traditional touches include cream body and fingerboard binding, pickguard, and pickup rings, along with gold Speed Knobs with dial pointers. Classic Gibson construction ensures optimum playability, too, along with traditional specs like a 24¾” scale length, a 1 11/16” width across the PLEK-cut Corian nut, and a 12" fingerboard radius for smooth, easy bending.

Pure vintage-voiced tone with a contemporary edge is assured by a pair of Gibson’s ’57 Classic™ pickups with traditional chromed covers. Both are made in the image of the hallowed PAF humbucker of the late 1950s with Alnico II magnets, a traditional wind in the neck position for plenty of warmth and clarity, and slightly over-wound coils in the ’57 Classic Plus™ in the bridge position for juicy crunch and wailing lead tones.

Both pickups are wax potted, too, to avoid microphonic squeal at high volume levels, and routed through Orange Drop tone capacitors to their individual tone controls for a smooth, rich high-end roll off. The innovative pairing of a tune-o-matic bridge and stopbar tailpiece ensures solid sustain and precise intonation, while a set of high-quality TonePros vintage-style ensures smooth, accurate tuning.

Each guitar includes a Gibson hardshell case covered in black snakeskin-textured vinyl, an owner’s manual and truss-rod wrench.

Superb sound...meaty, tonal...SO nice - the combo of the solid (once again!) body and '57 Classics makes for one of the most iconic guitars of all time! The Honey burst finish is gorgeous and gives it that '50s-'60s look and feel. This is one special guitar that purists will cherish. Rock, blues, etc. are all a breeze for this bad-axe!

This is a superb instrument which now sits next to my 1976 Les Paul Standard. Gibson quality all the way. The action is out of this world ... just a few minor adjustments. I had put .010 strings on it and may move to .011s (most of my Gibson guitars I use .011s). Plays great ... sounds great! Get one!!!

Once I got the Brite Wires off my 10 lb (*my* "ideal" LP weight) Caramel 'Burst BEAUTY, top-wrapped a set of Vintage Nickels on the tightened-down Stop Bar & gave the TOM little more than a hard stare, this mild-mannered NON-WEIGHT RELIEVED sweetie became an absolute TONE BEAST! While I'm partial to my R1(!) SG @ .002" off the dead-level 'board, THIS monster (with my VERY minor tweaks) has SO much character, she could have her own TV show. Fit/finish are flawless, representing a resurgence in Gibson "Nashburg's" commitment-to-quality. While I take care of the tools of my (now) hobby - this instrument is a total player lovingly crafted FOR a total player BY total craftsfolks who it's STRIKINGLY evident really DO care about their work. Always ambivalent regarding 'AA,' 'AAA' or gazillion A tops (hey, it's the albino alligator that gets poached), the 'AA' on mine is, in fact, icing-on-the-ca... guitar! This is unsolicited, I'm in no way connected to anyone or thing (except my wife) & RARELY write reviews (I prefer writing/playing music FAR & beyond more than talking about it & at 58, the list of those whom I feel compelled to impress was completed looong ago. If you're on-the-fence, I sincerely hope this little treatise is the nudge you need. Unless you're a 'send it back 'til I get the (multiple) A top I can stare @ in the stand' kinda person, you will NOT be disappointed. That said/typed, the last train to ToneTown is about to head out, so "Good night, Austin, TX, wherEVER you are!"
