Gibson Limited Run SG Special '60s Tribute Electric Guitar (H71136)

The voice of '60s classic rock.

What do Pete Townshend, Carlos Santana, and Tony Iommi all have in common? Back in the '60s, each of these legendary guitarists played a Gibson SG Special with P-90 pickups—and made music history in the process. To bring this beloved rocker back to guitarists in the 21st century, Gibson USA introduces the SG Special '60s Tribute, a guitar that honors the beloved SG Specials of nearly 50 years ago, in an instrument primed with the tone, versatility, and playability demanded by modern musicians.

Since its arrival on the scene in 1961 (originally as the Les Paul/SG Special), Gibson's dual-horned, double-cutaway SG has been an iconic rock axe, and has become known for solid performance and tonal versatility that is unparalleled in the guitar world. The SG Special '60s Tribute is based around the same revered tonewoods, glued-in neck, and Alnico-magnet P-90 pickups that made its predecessor legendary, with the same SlimTaper™ '60s neck profile that is behind some of the fastest-playing guitars in history. Stripped-down and ready for business, the SG Special '60s Tribute has the look and feel of a well-played friend right out of the gigbag, and comes in at a price that any hard working player can well and truly afford!

  • Great guitar for the price

As reviewed by Joel Youngblood on 2/16/2011

Just picked up the new SG '60s Tribute. This SG is a good instrument for the price. Gibson has had some issues with quality in recent years (I know because I have 6 Les Paul Standards and two other SGs, including a '61 Reissue), but I found no problems with this one. The set-up was even reasonably good right out of the box. I had an SG Classic with P-90s and bought the '60s Tribute because I prefer the slim tapered neck (the Classic's neck is a bit thick). This neck is fast and the P-90s sound beautiful. The finish was perfect, although the nitro still smelled, making me think Gibson shipped this one the second it was finished instead of curing it first. All in all, I'm happy with the purchase. My only complaint is the cheap gig-bag, it's of poor quality and almost too small for the guitar -- you have to wedge it in, risking scratching the finish on the zipper. Buy yourself a hardshell case.

  • Great classic rocker

As reviewed by King Kamehameha on 7/6/2011

I purchased this guitar as a backup for my Les Paul, and I am very pleased. I have always wanted a guitar with P90s, but wasn't planning on buying this particular guitar when I walked in to GC. The bite of the treble pickup and the tonal possibilities really make this guitar shine. It doesn't have the chunky sound or heavy weight of the Les Paul, and I think this will be a better gigging guitar for me. The clarity of the P90 pickups and the ease of harmonics really make this guitar great for classic rock like Yes and The Who, and the light weight makes it easier to play for hours on end. That doesn't mean it can't produce heavy sounds, though... the biting bridge pickup sounds great playing AC/DC and Judas Priest. In the end, this guitar has made my mind up - I will never buy anything but a Gibson again.

  • Very good guitar

As reviewed by Andy on 7/8/2011

This guitar is an amazing step up to Gibson guitars if you don't have the money to get something that costs $$$. I loved the sound of the p-90 pickups. They have a great spanky sound to them. It's definitely not for the emo crowd who play that same-sounding hardcore rock. It's gonna sound amazing for melodic guitar riffs and would go well with your vintage style overdrives because they will make those p-90s sing. I'd have to say it's a very light guitar too making it great for the stage musician who plays for a long time on stage. I only played it at looking for amps, but it was the best guitar I played there that day. I recommend you try one as soon as you get a chance. The one I played was in white. The only thing I didn't really like was the paint. It felt like it was brushed on with a brush. It would have taken awhile for it to become slick and smooth on the neck, so beware if you get it in white that it will need some finishing break-in.
