A mahogany back, maple top, SE pickups and a low-B string for increased versatility.

The SE Custom 24 7-String, PRS Guitars first 7-string production instrument, takes familiar PRS aesthetics and playability to new sonic territory. Using the Custom 24 as a platform, this guitar adds a low-B string to offer increased versatility to the player who wants more tonal range. Whether you’re playing rock, jazz, or metal, this guitar provides extended low-end growl, increased chordal variance, and a greater ability to embellish standard chords.

The SE 7-String features a beveled maple top with flame maple veneer and mahogany back, a 24-fret, 25” scale length maple neck with rosewood fretboard and bird inlays. The electronics package pairs SE HFS and SE Vintage Bass pickups with a volume, push/pull tone, and 3-way blade switch. The SE HFS and SE Vintage pickups were designed to mirror the Maryland-made pickups of the same name (used on the Custom since 1991). Originally meaning Hot, Fat, and Screams, the HFS was the evolution of the original Standard treble pickup. The HFS is a powerful pickup with a balance of aggression, clear highs, strong mid-range, and strong bass. Likewise, the Vintage bass is the evolution of the original Standard bass pickup and has a warm high-mid sound that is excellent for many musical styles.

  • Surprisingly Cool Guitar

As reviewed by BEN ADAMS on 9/16/2013

I don't physically own one of these, but I do own the SE custom 24 six string. I saw one of these at my local Guitar Center and decided to pick it up and give it a try. I'm not going to lie, I was pretty worried about the responsiveness of the pickups, and whether or not PRS would be able to pull off an extended range instrument (I'm not doubting PRS's quality, because it's amazing). They pulled it off and then some! Playability: It's just like playing my six string just with a little wider neck. It's still that "Wide Thin" neck so your hands will still glide across the neck. The guitar is light so you aren't worried about holding up a massive chunk of wood. Pickups: Like I mentioned before, it's pretty solid on the sound. The bridge pickup can sound a little muddy at times when using the low B, but for the most part it held it's own. Not the best sound in the world, but not far from it. Neck pickup is great with this guitar and really brings out the bass frequencies when you want to use the low B as well (I usually use it clean). And of course the coil tap option adds for great versatility. I personally enjoyed the tapped bridge better than the full on humbucker. It was a cool and different sound from your stereotypical 7 string. Appearance: At first sight people see a normal but beautiful PRS, but then they look closer and notice that you have an extra string and it throws them for a loop! But the finish and look is stellar as expected. All in all, if I had more use for a 7 string guitar I probably would have walked out with one, but I've owned 2 7 strings, both of which I sold within a year of buying just because I didn't use it enough.
