Gibson Les Paul Special Electric Guitar with P-90 Pickups (H78102)

Biting P-90s on a vintage body.

The Les Paul Special with P-90s is an excellent rock guitar at a very attractive price. Basic, straightforward and ready to rock hard. Two classic P-90 pickups are loaded into a solid mahogany body for pure Gibson power. Mahogany set neck with baked maple fingerboard and nitro lacquer finish, naturally, for pure Gibson Tone!

The two-pickup Les Paul Special was introduced in 1955 as an intermediate model, positioned between the low-cost Les Paul Junior and the Les Paul. It was originally available only in a single-cutaway, TV-style limed mahogany finish. A double-cutaway Special and cherry red finish option were introduced in 1959. The Les Paul Special made the virtues of the Les Paul available to those who couldn't quite afford the Standard or Custom versions. And it still has all the essential features.

Two P-90 single-coil pickups produce the raw powerful tone that helped define the blues and rock and roll in their formative years. Today, the P90's traditional combination of high output and brilliant tone is still considered a favorite among many top musicians.

  • Yup it's a Gibson

As reviewed by Dean Miller on 11/28/2011

As a lover of the Fender Strat single coil sounds of the 50's and 60's, I think I know what vintage means in the blues and rock and roll playgrounds. Recently started to study the P-90 pick-ups from their introduction into the music world. Well, long story short, this Fender guy ordered one of these on sale Les Paul Specials. Right out of the box I said, "Wow, they describe this as, "cherry" it looks Paisano Red to me. I am Italian and the deep rich color was definitely, "Paisano Red"! Out of the box the set-up was close. A few minor adjustments and stretching of the strings and I was ready to plug in. All I can say is, "wow" that was an amazing jam session. I mean, you know instantly, this is a Gibson. Great sound, amazing neck, amazing color and weight. Play-ability is superb. I need to get a wah-wah pedal. It seems the only gripe I have comparing this to my love of the Stratocaster, is I need the wah wah effect. Other then that, I was impressed enough to log in to tell you that this is one great price on one great guitar!

  • Homely but beautiful

I already have a Gibson LP Studio, so I hadn't intended to get another LP, but the P90 sound and the playability of this guitar hooked me. The walnut finish is very nice, but lacks the smoothness and fruit smell of my LP Studio. Neck is a good shape for me, perhaps a couple millimeters slimmer than the "'50s" neck on my LP Studio. Setup was tweaked at the shop and it has a nice low action. Obeche fingerboard seems fine, but its color seems a bit off (I'm told Obeche is normally very light colored, this looks to have been dyed somehow to a weird Crayola brown). With any luck, It'll be a few years before I can tell how well it wears. The "vintage" Kluson tuners work fine (they have off-white tulip knobs as in the photo above, not the white buttons mentioned in the text), the guitar stays very nicely in tune. The nut feels like Corian, can't be sure. Total weight is about 8.2 lbs, a bit less than my LP Studio. I think a hard case would have been appropriate for the price; instead it came with an odd sort of foam gig bag that at least seems serviceable and has a soft lining.

  • It Will WORK !!!!

As reviewed by pepper roberts on 11/20/2012

When I bought My Gibson Les Paul Studio they only had the burst-bucker's. I would sure wish they had one with the P-90's. The one thing I did do to Mine that added tone for daze was put a Bigsby on it !! I too am a Hardcore Strat player but I just wanted an LP in My arsenal. Any Guitarist but have at least One Gibson LP and I've got 2 Strats and a Martin, so I'm covered. I suggest if Your an Les Paul owner a Bigsby is a must.
