Gibson Limited Run SG Gothic Morte Electric Guitar (106553746)

An all-black masterpiece with active humbuckers.

The SG Gothic Morte Electric Guitar's horned double-cutaway mahogany curves are cloaked in a Satin Ebony finish with matching black nickel hardware and black Grover tuners. Gibson USA GEM active humbuckers supply the dark, foreboding tones to create an epic soundscape. As the members of Spinal Tap put it, "What could be more black? None, none more black."

The beating heart of the SG Gothic Morte (morte is French for death) is represented by a pair of Gibson USA's amazing new GEM (Gibson Electronics Manufacturing) active pickups. Made in the image of the greatest traditional passive pickups of all time, Gibson's own PAF ("Patent Applied For") humbuckers, the GEMs have Alnico II magnets and coils wound with 42 AWG enamel-coated wire. They also include active electronics for greatly improved output and extremely low-noise performance. The GEMs are powered by a single 9v battery that yields approximately 1500 hours of service. They have a voice and playing feel akin to Gibson's popular Burstbuckers, with all of that humbucker's characteristic "smooth with edge" tonal response, and they are immune to the loading effects of volume and tone potentiometers. They offer an extremely fast transient response for unprecedented articulation (yet with all the classic humbucker warmth and smoothness), and are extremely compatible with both effects pedals and clean amp settings. Suitable for all styles of music, the GEM active pickups represent a huge leap forward in performance and versatility.

Comprising the traditional solid-mahogany body and neck that has provided a rich, resonant platform for SG models for 50 years, the SG Gothic Morte introduces an exotic new fingerboard wood, African Obeche. A dark, dense alternative to Ebony, African Obeche is fully sustainable. As used on the Les Paul Gothic Morte, the African Obeche fingerboard carries no inlays or binding to extend the model's "none more black" styling. In addition to the guitar's Satin Ebony nitrocellulose finish, the SG Morte wears a black Tune-O-Matic bridge with a black stopbar tailpiece, black Grover tuners, and a black Corian nut which has been precision cut on the PLEK for optimum intonation. Add it up, and it's a radical reincarnation of a guitar that was born to be wild a full half a century ago—but is now propelled to greater extremes than ever with new active pickups, sustainable exotic woods and all-black styling.

  • Might get one. Extremely surprised

When I walked into Guitar Center, I went in looking for a LTD Snakebyte to try out. I saw this guitar at the front of the store, so after I tried out the Snakebyte, I grabbed this from the stand and ran it through a Marshall. This guitar looks more appropriate for metal, but looks can be deceiving. The guitar is actually quite versatile. My 1st instinct is to drive the crap out of a guitar since I usually have an aggressive playing style. The pups are active, and while they have a lot of power and definition to them, they don't have that compressed character to their tone that EMGs are known to have. I scooped the mids 1st, and got some powerful chugging that had a lot of bite. I brought the mids up and got an awesome modern rock sound. I improv'd a solo, and every note sang with incredible clarity. Every note rings evenly when held. Nothing gets cut short. Don't be fooled by this detail and assume cleans are horrible. Clean sounds are actually quite pure. The guitar is one of the lightest solid bodied instruments I've ever held. The neck profile is a little beefy compared to my current guitar, which has a speed taper neck, but I have larger hands, so the neck actually feels better in my hands. My only issue is the fact that this guitar doesn't come with a case. A guitar this good should come in a case, not a gig bag. Otherwise, it's great!
