      Taylor DN3 Sapele/Spruce Dreadnought Acoustic Guitar (514282)
Availability:

Booming bass and articulate mids that dare you to dig in.

The Taylor DN3 Dreadnought Acoustic Guitar delivers signature Taylor performance, quality, and value. The DN3 Guitar is a great introduction to the solid-wood Taylor experience. The Taylor DN3 has a back and sides made of sapele, and a Sitka spruce top to create a rich tonal tapestry. Appointments include a bound ebony neck, chrome plated tuners, and an Indian rosewood headstock overlay. Simple, traditional styling and renowned Taylor craftsmanship make this one of their most popular models.

The traditional shape and sound have been refined to blend power with a more balanced response

Bob Taylor launched his career crafting Dreadnoughts, working with shapes he inherited from Sam Radding, the owner of the American Dream guitar shop, where he and Taylor co-founder Kurt Listug got their start.

The legacy of this shape carried a powerful, traditional sound that Bob gradually reworked into a refined Taylor tone and more smoothly contoured look. The rosewood/spruce 810 became a Taylor stalwart and was for many years Bob's preferred model, favored for its robust tone and understated, workmanlike aesthetic.

In 2003 the Dread underwent a major revoicing to give it a more competitive identity among old school flatpickers. A cannon, it boasted 50 percent more volume (which also meant more dynamic range), yielded an appreciably stronger bass response, and let out a hearty growl when pickers dug in, all without upsetting Taylor's sonic balance. As Bob put it during the revoicing process: "I want to be able to play a Dreadnought on the bass strings and then on these middle D and G strings and have it sound like the same guitar."

Bob later applied some of his short-scale ideas to the 710ce-L9 limited in 2005, and it proved to be a winner. Like the short-scale GC, the slinkier feel allowed players to lighten up on their attack and play up the neck. It gave the Dreadnought more versatility than it had ever seen. Short-scale or standard, the Taylor Dreadnought delivers a vintage sound for the 21st Century.

Play a Dreadnought if: You're a flatpicker or strummer looking for a potent, traditional sound.

  • Taylor wins!

As reviewed by mike on 8/28/2009

Just completed an exhaustive search this past summer where I played dozens of acoustics in the $1000-1500 range (and some higher, although I couldn't afford them!)I finally narrowed it down to a couple Martins, and the DN3. The Taylor won the four main evaluations I considered: neck, action, tone and volume. The neck plays like butter; very smooth and feels great in my hand. The action is perfect- hammer-ons and barre chords are easy and sound great. The tone is well balanced, especially the mids. And the volume totally blew away the Martins in this price range. Great sustain! Even finger picking came across strong. I can't say it beats Martins and Gibsons for double the price, but for $ this is the best acoustic I found. Very happy...

  • Whoa, Cannon!

As reviewed by Scott on 7/7/2010

I went into GC certain I was going to buy a Martin or a Breedlove at around $1000. I picked up this guitar for comparison and BOOM! Nothing in the price range could touch the volume of this guitar. Playability and rich tone sealed the deal. A pickguard would have been nice, But that can easily be added.

  • Is it really true?

As reviewed by Bobby Spassov on 3/21/2012

Yes it is that good. I have been playing guitar on and off for 12 years this is my second high priced acoustic ( I consider high to be more than $1000 for an acoustic). The first acoustic I bought and end up exchanging for this one was Martin GPCPA4, which is a good guitar but I replaced the plastic bridge pins with Tusq, lowered the action and still couldn't get it to play comfortably for me. I tend to be a heavy strummer so I was experiencing a lot of string buzz. So back to GC, I played most every guitar on the wall (even when choosing the Martin) and the DN3 just melted in my hands like butter. Action was almost perfect off the wall, it sounded warm and loud compared to other Taylors I've played even the higher end. It looks so simple yet elegant, although I installed a pick guard and some abalone inlayed pins just a personal touch. I have been playing it for over two weeks now and it seem to be build flawlessly. I also but some Martin DARCO 12s and its louder with a better bottom end. The case is supper nice, it would have been even better if you are able to lock it. My advise is if this instrument is in your price range definitely worth giving it a go. If your budget is smaller try some of the Seagulls they are very nice guitars IMO. In conclusion I would buy this guitar again with no doubt in my mind.
