Gibson Les Paul Studio Electric Guitar (517030)
Availability:

All the famous Les Paul ingredients at a fraction of the cost.

The arrival of the Gibson Les Paul Studio Electric Guitar in 1983 offered guitarists all the essential elements of a Les Paul Standard, including a carved top and humbucking pickups. Its simple yet elegant design quickly helped it become the most popular model in the Les Paul Series. Cutting-yet-rich tone—the hallmark of the Les Paul—pours out of the 490R and 498T Alnico II magnet humbucker pickups (BurstBucker Pro on faded models), which are mounted on a carved maple top with a mahogany back. The Les Paul Studio Electric Guitar includes a Gibson hardshell case (Faded and satin finish models come with a gig bag) and a limited lifetime warranty.

Body and Finish
A solid, carved maple top and chambered mahogany body give the Les Paul Studio the same tonewood combination that has been helping Les Paul Standards rock for nearly 60 years. And each of its four available nitrocellulose finishes makes for a stunning looking guitar, even while its no-frills approach eliminates body binding and pickguard.

Mahogany is a medium-dense wood with excellent resonance and superior sustain, and it offers a rich, round, warm tone, but with plenty of high-end sheen and good mid-range presence. Add a solid maple top, and the guitar's tone is enhanced with added clarity, sustain and definition. The body's chambering also enhances its mellow acoustic resonance, and adds further air to the midrange content.

Pickups
Gibson's 498T and 490R pickups ("T" for treble, and "R" for rhythm) have the traditional characteristics of the original "Patent Applied For" pickups of the late 1950s, with a few upgrades. These pickups take advantage of wax potting, which does away with any air space inside the pickup, therefore lessening the chances of microphonic feedback. The result is a humbucker with the tonal characteristics of an original PAF, with a slight increase in upper mid-range response. The Gibson 498T bridge pickup is the 490R's ideal complement.

Taking the 490R one step further, the 498T is wound a little hotter and also swaps the Alnico II magnet for an Alnico V, giving it more punch and greater emphasis on midrange and highs. The 490R/498T is one of the most versatile humbucking pickup sets available. In the neck position, the former yields juicy, warm vocal tones with outstanding clarity, while the latter in the bridge position excels at everything from bright jangle through a clean amp to wailing overdrive with near-infinite sustain through a high-gain amp. Selected together, the pair gives you everything from funky to greasy, depending upon amp and effects settings.

  • Brown Faded Mahogany Studio

As reviewed by Dennis on 8/29/2010

OK lets cut to the chase. 49 years playing guitar. Been through 50+ guitars. Had les paul custom from the seventies, es-335 from 1979, been there, done that, here's what you guys (and girls need to know). I read all the reviews because I love playing the guitar and spend many hours trying to become a better guitarist/musician and will keeep on learning till I die. I bought a 2010 STUDIO because I am sending one of my daughters through college (nursing school) and have gas (guitar acqusition syndrom) at the same time and can't pay the big bucks as I have other great guitars. Long story short, I purchased this guitar today. I don't need 2 or 3 months to test it. The Burstbucker pros are the same as the ones used on the higher end models. Just wonderful. The only ones close to that sound are the 57 classics. The salesmen, who are like my brothers and sisters to me at guitar center Colonie, New York were speechless. This guitar had a FIGURED mahagony top. Try to imagine that!!! Flamed mahogany? I have to ask Gibson how they did that. Best top they ever saw on a studio. I am respected at this store and we don't BS one another. Mind you, I had one before but gave it up for an acoustic for my daughter and it had a three piece back. This guitar has a one piece back. Are you kiddding? I think someone at Gibson was compelled ( or obsesssed) with providing someone with a nice affordable Les Paul. While I am not a fan of chambered guitars, I can tell you, you will not regret at least tryng this guitar. It rings and you can feel the vibration through your body. I don't know if you're going to get one as nice as the one I bought , but at least try it. By the way, I have a 2008 Fender Standard Strat and Tele and they are phenomenal and play like butter) but every serious guitar player must have a Les Paul ( God rest his soul) for their collection . Good luck searching and learning!!!!!!!!!

  • a great model of the les pauls. FANTASTIC

As reviewed by matt graham on 11/2/2010

ok so i bought this guitar the other day on halloween and i simply love it. it is lightweight and sounds great. the 2 humbucker pickups and the 3 way toggle switch make it produce a great sound. it is a high quality and trustworthy guitar. i tried a few different models of the les paul studio such as the alpine white with gold hardware and the red wine model with gold hardware. they all sounded great but not as great as the ebony chrome harware (which is the one i bought) the ebony chrome hardware i think sounds the best and looks the best. i now have 4 guitars and before i bought this one i had a fender squire acoustic, a fender squire electric, and junky 70 dollar acoustic i bought when i was 7. i played my electric fender squire with a G-DEC fender amp and a marshal pocket amp. when i plug my gibson in to my G-DEC it sounds great. this guitar is for experienced guitarists and is high quality. yeah it is a lot of money but it is worth it. i didnt purchase the epiphone version because they are made with a little less quality and sound a little different. they are also made of different wood which affects the sound too. but to summarize the guitar it is a great guitar with great sound and is just beautiful. it comes with a great hardshell case and deal. they give you a nice warranty and return policy (not that you will need it) i hope this review helped you decide.

  • Faded Les Paul My Turn !

As reviewed by Marvin Brown on 10/3/2011

O.K. -the first thing I do before I buy something is read the reviews-so now its my turn to give one.... when I was younger I owned a Les Paul Custom and a Standard-sadly I was forced to sell to make ends meet,so recently I wanted to treat myself to a new guitar,I knew I wanted a Gibson, but I wasnt real sure about the Studio,so after I read some great reviews I took a drive down to my local Guitar Center.when I first saw the new faded brown Studio,I loved it! It has a great neck-chunky-but not too thick, the chambered body is nice and light but still gives great harmonics, and the sound is...well...typical Les Paul, the bridge pickup is beefy and thick, and the neck pickup can still get some nice smooth cleans-I am very pleased because now again I own a real Gibson, made right here in U.S.A.- I hope this review helps-go try one today !
