  • My Favorite Strat

As reviewed by Richard Foulkes on 5/9/2011

Why do you own a Strat? Well for me it is the tone clarity and variation that low energy single coils can give and the ease that the strat neck gives to the player. I own too many strats. I have a Rory Gallagher which I love with its vibe and tone as well as the worn in thin neck. I have a 57 CS with its slightly narrow neck and sparkling quack and timber. I have a 69 set up with Hendrix pick ups that wants to break up on about 6 of volume and can really grab that Hendrix vibe. I have a VG that as a giging guitar really can deliver some cool tones that can be dialed in including an accoustic tone and some odd tunings that are fun if not perfect in tone and certainly can please an impaired club crowd.. My favorite though, hands down is this one. I think it is the hard tail, the really thick neck, the sparkling pick up tone that gives a huge range from the neck to the bridge. More than any other strat. The vibe is the of the Cray is over the top and it really is a statement of about what we give up with that sacred mobile bridge and block on "normal" strats. The custom shop work on mine goes back to the 90's but it is as they say "worth the money". I play this one out nearly always. Mine is a purple color that I don't think I have seen on another strat. All in all if you have to have one strat to take on the rest of the ride..This is it.. I have not tried the MIM version but I think if you are not a whammy bar person the tone is worth it to play a Cray..

  • Robert Cray Custom Shop Strat: One for the ages...

As reviewed by Matt aka buds on 10/23/2006

The Walk around: Lets see... TONS of birdseye on the 12" radius neck. Very light weight. Excellent tone out of the vintage pickups. Cool hardtail setup. Attractive gold hardware. The nitty gritty: This Strat is very diffrent than what you may expect, it really tricks you into thinking it is a Telecaster with 3 pick ups and a 5-way switch! It must be the hardtail or something. But with it's straight forward approach and KILLER tone it gets the job done. I have owned the standard Cray Strat as well, and this one from the Custom Shop is worth every penny. The Standard is good but not great when compared to the Custom Shop offering. Playing around: My guitar rig consist's of a Boss DD-3(delay)TR-2(tremolo)-Ibanez FL-9(flanger)-and a Boss CS-3(comp-sustain), plugged into a Fender Princeton Chorus amp. The Cray works great with a little delay and some tremolo rolling in the mix. The big neck is perfect for bahr chords and string bending. The only thing I could complain about is the lack of tone on the bridge pickup. It is a easy fix, but I just wish it was done from the factory. But all in all this Strat works good in blues, jazz and really anything! Putting it all together: This signature Strat is one of Fenders long running models along with the Clapton Strat and the James Burton Telecaster. That alone proves it is a keeper! And one for the ages just like the man Robert Cray!
